Hmm, still coming in almost $100 billion in the red.

Probably best to cut in stages anyway.

Cut 'corporate welfare' some, but I left the tax cuts.

                Couple of things:
Sava: first off the budget is still raiding from the SS trust fund(you need to cut about 100B more for that to stop), I'm kinda suprised that these guys play those number games, though maybe thats in there somewhere.

Second, while I agree whole heartedly with your protectionist policies, what will you do when the countries whom you are going to close our markets to dump their dollars and debt(over a trillion dollars I think at this point) in retaliation? Something to think about.

And a more general one, I find it amazing that I cut the most out of tax cuts&expenditures, really out of character for me. Ah well, not a friend of MNC tax breaks here.

Interesting. Is there a way to modify the script so it takes into account the whining of senators, representatives and special interests?

"You have cut the deficit by $436.88 billion. Your new deficit would have been $-79.87 billion, but Senator Tom Public, R-XX and Sen. Jane Public, D-XX, along with their special interest buddies and House support, added in a $400 billion drug prescription entitlement program for seniors, so you now have a deficit of more than $300 billion."

there are also other factors not included in this thing... it's just for fun.
Second, while I agree whole heartedly with your protectionist policies, what will you do when the countries whom you are going to close our markets to dump their dollars and debt(over a trillion dollars I think at this point) in retaliation? Something to think about.
I don't really care about multi-nationals and the business they might lose... I want to rebuild American industry... that starts with building a strong American consumer base. So called "protectionist" policies are better for societies. Look at what the free-market policies have done to Latin and South America. I'm not saying I'd put huge tariffs on imports... quite frankly, because I'm pragmatic, I'd shape my policy to get the results I seek. If giving massive welfare to corporations and "freeing markets" built wealth for the vast majority of Americans, I'd do that. But it has been a proven failure for my goals.

In addition, my federal budget would be significantly smaller than the budgets we have today. Yes, I would support universal health care and better education programs, but that doesn't mean MORE money necessarily. It means cutting the fat. It's kind of funny when one looks at the rise in health care costs in America, they parallel the rise in corporate profits.

I'm not taking the position that all profit is bad... there needs to be incentive. But the massive corporate excesses we have today are a terrible detriment to the efficiency of our health care system. There needs to be balance.

to echo my sig line... laissez faire capitalism is as flawed and foolish an ideology as communism. Complete control cannot be trusted to the state, nor private interest. And because I'm a firm believer in Jeffersonian Democracy, government's ability to provide for the public welfare should not be usurped by private interest.

The ideals of government providing for the public welfare are in the preamble of the Constitution. It is part of the structure of our government. Laissez faire capitalism and free market ideals aren't.

In addition, I also believe that business (in general) functions better when small and independent franchises compete. The very nature of laissez faire capitalism are in conflict with the ideals of competition. Look at the development of any industry. The strong eat the weak until there is one (or a few... forming a cartel) left alive to control the industry.

Capitalism is a game... it needs rules. And the government is the referee keeping things fair.
To us, it is the BEAST.

Heh. Yeah, yeah. The point was an attempt on my part to add in RL factors when it comes to figuring out budgets — be they city, county, state or national — and that's that special interests are everywhere.

I wish it were as simple as being given a sheet of paper with numbers on it, making cuts an additions, and then sending it back to be compliantly signed into law by Congress. But such is life in a republic.
