I certainly hope that 'armed' can be interpreted to mean something other than guns.

Dart guns, electric stun guns, chemical sprays, high-frequency sound devices, there's lot's of stuff that can be used.

A 9mm bullet can easily pass through the human body with enough force to penetrate a passenger window.
Bush is from texas. I'm sure they all have .44 magnums. the most powerful handgun known to man.

But of course, since 800 to 1000 flights a day will be susceptible of having Marshalls in them, we can only expect to have the cream of the crop, can't we?

I know that the marshalls should be armed with special bullets that are designed not to be as effective penetrators, this is what is done in the US. I'm not certain of whether they are capable of penetrating a window. I do think some Europeans are getting very unreasonably worried about this though, the US air marshall program has been in place since the 1970's and I've never read about any inciddent involving a gun depresurizing anything. While the risk may go up in the event of an actual terrorist hijacking, this is already an inherent dangerous situation.

They definately would not ordinarily be put on every flight, but randomly assigned to create the possibility of one being on board as something hijackers would have to worry about. They also would be likely to put on any flights that the government is worried about due to intelligence information.

They'll likely be French cops on Air France flights.

              No.
              I will.

the way air travel is going, I predict a return of the trans-atlantic passenger ship.

                Huge volume=less cost.

People don't care about saving a few days in most cases, if it means they can save $1000s.

If I'm spending a two-week vacation in the US, you bet I won't take a passenger ship to do this (two weeks fro and two weeks back AFAIK )
Same thing, if I want to go to the US for business, I will use the fastest mean.

Only the ones on permanent vacation, or the ones migrating to the US will use transatlantic ships. For all the others, shps are way too slow.

I predict that we will invent inertial damping and then create enormous cannons from which we fire huge shells that unfold into planes w/ ppl inside them.

then u glide the entire way to ur destination!

                            the future kicks ass.

                                Spiffor:

Why weren't guys like you riding the Concorde? Their whole business plan was based around the idea that people would be willing to pay for faster travel. That's what consumers said in surveys they wanted.

But the consumer was a LIAR. It turned out that what we really wanted was to be crammed into into discount airlines with less than 18'' of leg room in order to get lower prices.

Look at Pop Mech 10 years ago: supersonic planes for all those speed conscious people.

Look at it now: Giant 'double decker' slow aircraft in the works, because regardless of what people say with their mouths, their ticket sales said that they want price price price (which=big+slow mass movers)
