And then of course there is Ungoliant, the giant spider thing that is "from outside the world." Of whom Shelob is a descendant.
Shhhhhhhh! For the people who haven't read the books, Shelob will come as a rather nice suprise (well, not sure how it will go in the movie, but I saw it as a turning point).

Yes he WROTE the hobbit first. But he conceived of LOTR first, which your source does not note. I beleive i saw that in Tolkiens own preface to LOTR, where he talks of putting aside the "unpublishable" LOTR to write the Hobbit, then spends the next several years writing LOTR.
I think you're mixing up the Silmarillion and LOTR...
Foreword to the Second Edition of "Lord of the Rings"
This tale grew in the telling, until it became a history of the Great War of the Ring and included many glimpses of the yet more ancient history that preceded it. It was begun soon after The Hobbit was written and before its publication in 1937 [...]
Just nitpicking...
And of course Silm was written first, but published later - thats what i meant when i said silm was the reverse. sorry if my wording was unclear.
Ah yes... I misread.
Anyway, The Hobbit is definitely my favourite of the books I've read (Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales). LOTR is probably second.
I'll probably go see ROTK in January, I'm in no rush.
I had to wait an entire year already, two weeks isn't gonna make any difference (except that the theater will probably be slightly less crowded, and the ticket probably slightly less expensive)...
Not to mention I'm not much of a fan of the movies in the first place.

The only thing of Tolkien I have read is the Silmarillion (sp). I think the movies have been very well done, and not having read the book I don't have to compare. Off course, I don't judge movies by who faithful they are to the book-different medium, different judgement.
I agree. I haven't read the books either and decided against reading them until after I have seen all three movies. If one watches the DVD commentaries by Peter Jackson and the writers they will often mention why things where changed and sometimes it was simply a matter of time constraints and a result of another change made earlier. Over all I think the movies can stand by themselves as great stories. The lengths in to which they went to create middle earth are amazing and should be appreciated. I'm not saying there is no room for critizism but over all a pretty damned good effort..
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh

The best thing that the Silmarillion does for me, is it puts LotR into perspective. The battle between Gandalf and the Balrog stands out far more. "God" (I forget his name) is the most powerful. Then the Valar (Of which is Melkor, later renamed Morgrath. Compares with todays idea of the Devil). Then the Mair (the Balrog, Sauron and the Wizards). IIRC, the Wizards were created and placed on Middle-Earth with the sole purpose of defeating Sauron.
Bingo that's why its my favorite out of all of them. I feel that the movies are actually closer in spirit to the Silmarillion than Lord of the Rings, especially regarding the portrayal of the Elves.
But I always liked the appendixes too...
2 1/2 hours to go.

Haven't decided if I'm going to see it Thursday w/ family, see it tommorrow, or both.
I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

If you are a purist, you probably will not like some of the subtle character alts (especially Denethor and the relationship between Sam and Frodo), but Jackson (and kudos to Lee/Howe in the art direction dept.) absolutely nail everything in capturing the spirit of Tolkien in this final installment.
Watch this movie without trying to line it up with the book and you can accept the omissions and character alts as valid in their own right. For instance, my very favorite scene in the series did not make the cut (The Mouth of Sauron will be in the Extended DVD), and it would of added to the movie, yet I did not miss it as much as I thought I would (and based on its placement in the book, it wouldn't have had the same impact in the movie anyhow)
Helm's Deep is a walk in the park compared to Minas Tirith/Pelannor Fields.
As a sidenote - the new 'Harry Potter' trailer was shown too...
