  • Apolyton Organic Synthesis.

This is probably the geekiest thread since who was going to win, Star Trek or Star wars.

I am aware of the fact that there are a number of well seasoned chemists here, as well as closely connected disciplines, so I decided to have some Organic synthesis fun. We will plan the synthesis of the most devious molecules from the simplest alkanes.

    Wanna play?

Of course, I am just a puny 3rd simester student, so have pity on me. I am here to watch, mostly.

Isn't that an oxymoron? Unless it's some euphimism of some sort.

Thought so. Now let's start with this one. I honestly have no idea about this, except that the molecule is Uracil, an RNA base.

I can't really contribute as it was nine long years since I took the organic chemistry course.
Anyway, if you can solve the uracil synthesis, feel free to use this as the next one

Didn't get that far in Chemistry, Azazel, though I did do well in the courses I took.

Nice to see even Organic Chemists have a sense of humour.

                      Just first year Chem.

Got an invite from the department to carry on, which I considered, but I turned it down to go into physics.

I hated experiments, in that I could get the theory perfectly, but in trying to demonstrate the theory, I would always make some kind of mistake. I blew my last lab, just a titration and the preparation of a standard solution, but the lab instructor took pity and let me use their solution.

If we have to do experiments, I want lots of time, rather than the immense time constraints of the undergrad labs. I hated the pressure.

Physics and Astronomy really suited me, since all the work involved computers, and computations, things that did not necessarily face a time constraint, or much less severe than the ones in an undergrad Chem lab.

Had I not faced a difficult second year in Chem with respect to experiments, I probably would have taken the department up on their offer, and remained in Chemistry. I would probably have my degree now, since I would not have needed nearly as much math as in Physics.

Instead, I'm an artsie, just about finished my History degree.

I knew chemistry wasn't my thing after I had set fire to my classroom

spilling alcohol over some fire is fun to see though

I love experiments... Half the fun is setting things on fire

Nothing says fun like smelling DiEt-Ether all day long.

Seriously, the lab is all the fun. and then, sending your results to NMR, to see whether you got it right.

I've done no chemistry since twelfth grade - and now I've got vacation employment doing organic synthesis.

                              The odors truly are horrendous.
