you know what sucks ? in this political climate, it's damn hard to have any moderate views aired without being tarred by both sides for being one of the enemy.

twice now i've been called a liberal by rabid rightists. well, **** me for not toeing the goddamned party line, but i actually like thinking about things in a little more depth.

American politics is polarizing radically right now. There have alwayd been fringes but those are bcoming the norm.

I wonder (beside the civl war) when politics were this polarized in the US last?

in case you haven't noticed, it's been polarized ever since the clinton presidency.

only difference now is that saying you're a moderate is like placing a goddamned **** me sign on your back.

It was polarizing before Clinton-remember Pat Buchanan's culture war speech in Houston in '92. That attitude came from somewhere. Fine, seeing this play out in the halls on congress begun with Newt in '94 and the very tightness of Congress today does not help. Now, this admin has been very partisan more so than Clinton's by far.

The things about being a moderate though is, being a moderate is basically an issue by issue stance more than an ideological one..fine, there might be an underlying world-view, but since moderates have no real set point of view, neither side cares that much for them...Barry Goldwatrs words still carry lots of weight, on both sides actually.

American politics has always been that way. It's just that now the radicals on both sides are so much more vocal due to the various medias. That means that its not only around election time that you get to hear them but year round on every issue from a war to a governor's recall. These days its about filling air time..
