  • American Mythologies

Well, the Thanksgiving holiday is approaching here in United States, which has gotten me to thinking lately . . . .

is there no society, no matter how socially and tecnologically advanced, that does not have myths that a substantial number of its population still cling to???

Our Thanksgiving folktale is one such mythology -- Pilgrims and Amerindians embracing one another in pure harmony with a traditional feast in colonial North America.

    BLAH

Can anyone think of all the mythologies that is part of the culture of United States??

That all of the people from Fargo talk the way that they did in the movie.

Columbus was the 1st to discover America...and we never hear anything about the depopulation of the West Indies.

Cowboys = good, Indians = evil savages

The 1st Prsident of the US was technically not George Washington... when Maryland ratified the Articles of Confederation in 1781, John Hanson signed the document for Maryland and was then elected "President of the United States in Congress Assembled" Even George Washington acknowledged him as the first president.

A lot of the well known outlaws and heroes of the Wild West were simply products of the media, whose stories were nowhere near as exciting as what was published.

And let's not forget the cute, cherished myth of George Washington kneeling down while at Valley Forge, to pray for his army's fortune.

Perhaps he means labor union presidents.

The US isn't old enough to have 'mythologies'. It can have false histories, like the pilgrim thing, or the one about not getting an asskicking in Vietnam. The only mythologies on that continent are slowly dying out as Native American heritage gets diluted into modern 'culture'.

Afghanistan had nothing to do with oil - it was about sharing democracy.

McCarthyism was about Paul being dead.
