Again mariage is reduced to tax benefits, but it was initially created for one purpose : establish, as firmly as possible, the filiation. Today, the filiation is considered granted, but this is only possible when children are conceived in stable environment dutifully registered, that is mariage.
    Statistical anomaly.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

You are all missing the point.

Single people should NOT get marriage benefits, because they already enjoy the advantage of living alone: they can go home when and with whom they want to, they can get laid with whoever they want (or can ), they can go out with friends and get drunk, they don't have to tell every single day to the same woman: "I love you" or buy flowers and chocolates when they forget it, they are actually allowed to spend their own money, no one is yelling at them: "leave the damn computer and wash the dishes!", they can watch football on TV, they don't have to take care of kids, etc. Need I continue?

Men who are getting married must be rewarded/encouraged somehow, otherwise no sane man would marry a woman and give up his freedom!

You don't have to be married to give up your freedom.

Also, the fact a gay man or lesbian can be forbidden to see his/her lover who is seriously hospitalized smacks human decency and respect for others, down into the dirt.

I disagree with the notion that society has an interest in promoting marriage. Marriage is not in line with what is natural for humans. Men are designed to **** everything and spread their seed... they aren't inherently stable creatures designed for monogamous relationships. Marriage can be good, but it can be bad. I don't think married couples should get benefits from the government.

I think the issue is how do we help families and kids without penalizing gays.

Another issue, how do we get men interested in marriage rather than endless "dating."

But it would be interesting to learn more about the historical developments that led to legally sanctioned privileges of marriage in Western societies.

Any Apolytoner historian who is knowledgeable in this particular area?
Do you really want to go down this road Mr. Fun?
