In short, the article focuses on the concerns of two Dem senators in the US, who fear that the iminent relocation of a smart bomb munitions factory to mainland China may constitute a safety hazard.

If it's true that rare-earth magnets are a critical component of American military technology, then I can understand why the Pentagon ought to consider diversifying its supply dependencies.

However, if global economic forces are behind a growing Chinese monopoly on this technology, it may prove expensive to diversify. A careful cost/benefit analysis which accounts for the real strategic value of these magnets needs to be carried out to determine if the strategic risk warrrants action, such as subsidizing alternative rare-earth magnet sources.

I think the author perhaps makes a bit too much of the "princeling" connection involving Deng's daughter. Those people are legion in China, they are involved in all manner of lucrative ventures. Part of life in a guanxi- ("connection"-) driven society which values family ties above all.

Underlined text is a holdover from the days of typewriters. Emphasis should always be indicated with italics, never underlines. In fact, underlines should only be used to indicate hyperlinks.
