We've got both kinds -
The difference between 1 degree of Farenheit is smaller than Celsius. Thus, a jump from 70F to 71F is less noticeable than say 20C to 21C. It's better for air conditioners and heaters, if you want to get the temperature just right.
Many weather stations in America have a '5 degree guarantee.' They guess the temperature for the next day. If they are off by more than 5 degrees, then they donate money to local schools. what moron is going to measure 30 miles in inches?
there is nothing wrong with the U.S. standard system. Who cares how many inches are in a mile? It's not a useful conversion. We don't use the standard system for science anyways, so the point is moot. We only use it for everyday life.
Though I do think that engineering should convert to metric system. You know nuts and bolts type thing. I'm tired of doing fractions in my head.. I always have to figure out if 9/32 is smaller than 1/4 or not. You'd think I would remember by know, but end up always doing the math in my head every time. I'd rather use 10 mm sockets and wrenches.
But I see no reason to go to 3.3 liter milk containers. That's just silly.Comment

When it comes to science, the standard/imperial system is more trouble than it is worth, which is why scientists the world over (including Americans) use the metric system.
The metric system is just so much easier to understand because everything goes by powers of ten. Where as the "standard" system has seemingly no rhyme or reason to it's conversions.
As to why some Americans don't learn the metric system, the reason is probably the same as the reason that some don't learn to speak German or Chinese... They already have a language, and don't understand the benefit of learning a new one.Comment
