  • I'm going to see the Dali Lama tomorrow!

He'll be speaking at the September 11 service at the National Cathedral. Since my school is run by the Cathedral, I'm garaunteed a seat.

Anyway, the purpose of the thread is for somebody to give me a good synopsis of Buddhism, since I really don't know much about it. Buddhism seems to get a very good rap in the western world, but nobody seems to know much about it. Are there any Buddhists here at Apolyton?

Are you looking for information on its beliefs, its values, its history... all of that in one?

I'm just generally curious. I don't have anything specific in mind. Although I am particularly curious about how they decide who the next Dali Lama will be. IIRC they pick them when they're really little. I find the whole concept of a holy human rather interesting, because none of the western religions do that.

What's wrong with it? Do you object to religious tolerance? For shame.

                JW:

                With the exact same avatar?

I wanted to chop the 18 off my old username, but some stiff took the nick. I settled on Ben Kenobi.

I'm gonna fling spitwads at him on the 15th and see what he preaches then.

And I used to be such a good little Buddhist.

I mean when I was in the OT screen and you were last poster in the thread. Once I saw the familiar avatar and profiler prolifer, I realized your identity.

Oh BS. religioustolerance.org presents all major viewpoints on the major religions succinctly and in a very accessible manner. Sounds to me like you don't like it just because it gives time to alternative views to mainstream Christianity.

It doesn't play favorites, and it backs up its information with sources. Is it broad information? Absolutely, which is the intent--to give broad outlines of the different aspects of different religions. I suspect all JW wanted was a broad outline of the tenets of Buddhism, not in-depth religious criticism. So it fits the bill.

Unless you can find some sort of major flaw with how it presents Buddhism (other than, of course, it presenting Buddhism), your objection is hollow.

Well, all of a sudden, I'm an expert of buddhism? I don't have enough experience to critique their analysis.

                            Objective? Right.

I'm not going to jack the thread. I have major reservations that religioustolerance.org will provide correct information given their coverage of Christianity.

If I'm trying to learn more about a religion, I go to a site supported by the members of said religion. That seems to me a reasonable preposition.

If you don't want to back it up, fine...but my point stands that it gives equal time to most positions on significant issues. I don't see any evidence to the contrary. It does generalize things--on ALL sides--but that's the nature of a site devoted to concise information. As long as JW is aware of that, I don't see a problem.

Is a reasonable preposition in opposition to an irrational adverb?
