  • is population growth a good thing?

I live in London, which must be one of the busiest, most congested cities in the World.

This summer I travelled to Australia which must be the least busiest, least congested place in the World!!

Visiting Oz, I noticed that people were much more relaxed and happy. People spoke to each other. There was no road rage. The air was clean. Animals and the environment were cherished.

Obviously as a tourist you tend to see things through rose tinted glasses, but I couldn't help linking the good things to the space everyone had.

My point is that the current UK government's plan is to keep increasing the population in England. My question is why?

Environmentalist are against building new homes, airports, roads and all the other things more people will need. The pollution levels in London are appalling and anti-social behaviour is at its highest ever.

Surely if we reined in population growth, perhaps even reduced it, then everyone would be happier?

Well it's a new debate that I haven't heard before anyway!! So please let me know what you think...

population growth can be good, it depends on who is fruitful and multiplies.. poor people should abstain, since their procreation only increases poverty levels

Assumes a stratified society. Let's keep the poor in their place.

I say population growth is good, and that you are looking at only the negative aspects of London. When properly managed, population growth can be much less burdensome, than you notice in London. More of a fault of the cityplanners, than the population growth.

The biggest population problem is that there's just enough of me and way, way too much of you.

Population growth is good as long as it doesn't exceed the ability to sustain such itself.

Population growth is almost always a good thing.

It helps build a vibrant economy and society.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                    I don't drink coffee.

Seriously, everywhere is too crowded, the planet is already stretched to sustain everyone, and people suck. Thus more people will suck more, and we'll all collapse into a state of infinite suckiness.

I think some areas of the world are overpopulated... the US, however, has room for growth.

There's too many people in the US already. How the hell am I gonna buy a beach house with 300 million Americans around?

You can't just grow forever. Also I think people tend to behave like animals in places with very high populations. I see it here in NYC every day.
