What? You got to be kidding...
    "I didnt plan any crime!"
"We know that. You planned a violent act anyways!"
    ? Basic logic anyone?
According to this, then if you think to yourself, "What if someone someone put a nuke on a plane and had it detonate when flying over DC? No one checks check on baggage." then this is planning a violent act.

When Tom Clancy writes about terrorists nuking America, that is planning a violent act.

With this law, police can now start arresting anyone for 'planning' a violent act. It needs to be abolished, because thought should never be a crime. There is quite a difference between thinking of doing something bad and actually doing it. With this law, all the kid did was imagine something and now he is in huge trouble for it.

Even if he actually planned to do something bad (which he didn't, he just wrote a story) then he still shouldn't be arrested. You shouldn't be arrested for something you haven't even done. Because what if the person was going to do it but then decided not to? What if the person was just writing a story like this kid?
"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

No criminal intent... but if he goes to jail... he'll be a criminal. Hmm...

This is why I hate prosecutors, you give them an inch and they take a mile. I hope the judge laughs at this and tosses out the charges.

These kinds of laws are bull****. They're the classic "preemptive" twist--"We arrested him before he could do it"--but how do you know he was going to do it in the first place?

This example is only more outrageous because it was just a creative story and not a literal plan.

on the issue, I think we can all agree:

                    pure stupidity.

I can think of a creative protest...

Start a contest to write some dark short stories in a celebration of Edgar Allan Poe.

Stick them with the dilemma, if writing this stuff is a crime now, why should we permit them to read Poe?

I agree that it wasn't a crime, but I have to say that the kid was pretty stupid to write that and not expect some kind of reaction in the event of it being found. Prosecutors aside, school administrators tend to get twitchy about that kind of thing.

I think we are all guilty of planning conspiracies against many countries . I mean how many threads we have had about for example making violence, 'if you were terrorist how would you' this and that. I mean those have more reason than this kids paper.. everyone log off, destroy your HD's, change your ISPs FAST!

Next week some crazy kid builds a real Susie Q out of my plans, and then I'll be all over news there .

Have to agree with Ming.. once no more evidence of conspiracies... let it go..

okay, here's how you overthrow a government:

                                1) Get lots of kickass weapons
                                2) Kick lots of oppressive government official ass

I'm waiting to be detained, searched, and prosecuted now
