  • I don't believe how endlessly Bodds keeps going on about this stuff. Have you read any neurochemistry stuff? Do you know the mechanisms of clinical depression? Do you know what an SSRI does? Until you do, shut up...

No, it's that we don't falsely create victims so that they can be drugged to "feel better".

Funny, you seem quite happy to spout about economics.

Of course the same is true of most physical ailments - you'll get over most infections eventually, without antibiotics. And you probably wont lose as much productivity, make as much of a hash of things, while under the weather with Pneumonia as in a clinical depression. and antidepressants, whatever else they do, dont create drug resistant germs

So AD's are almost certainly LESS over prescribed than antibiotics.

I know a damn sight more about economics than you do about neurochemistry, that is the fact of the matter

plenty of conservatives acknowledge depression and the need to treat it.

A conservative is someone who believes that mental health care should be paid for by the private sector, and not paid for or mandated by the govt. Someone who doesnt think depression is real is not a conservative, just an idiot.

                    • Yeah, you know enough about neurochemistry to get you an £11k job doing filing and admin duties.

                      I'll earn £220 this week.

                            • economics - in a rational free market, people wont pay for what is not of value to them.

In the US, companies are not required to provide health insurance, but do so to attract and retain employees. In most states they are not required to provide mental health benefits.

Nonetheless most do - despite the fact that these benefits are costly. Presumably they do so since the absence of mental health benefits would impair their ability to attract/retain employees. Ergo, employees/job seekers are assigning value to such benefits in their labor market decisions.

And since employees/job seekers are rational in their labor market behavior, it follows that mental health care IS of value. QED.
