      right here, diss...

      some tid-bits...

They were twice as likely to call themselves Democrats as Republicans, viewed the Democratic Party more favorably than the Republican Party and, by a margin of 49 percent to 21 percent, said the Democratic Party was more likely to care about the needs of Hispanics.
They applauded tax cuts, calling them better economic policy than reducing deficits, and embraced the use of school vouchers. They were less likely than the population at large to support the legalization of homosexual relations between consenting adults. And 44 percent of Hispanics said abortion should not be legal, compared with 22 percent of non-Hispanics.
Hispanics were evenly divided on the question of whether homosexual relations between consenting adults should be legal; among the general public, this position is supported by 54 percent to 39 percent.
Hispanics approved of Mr. Bush's job performance 52 to 38 percent, while 54 percent said that he "cares about the needs and problem of people like yourself." By contrast, just 40 percent of Hispanics said they had a favorable view of the Republican Party, while 60 percent said they had a favorable view of Democrats

though i haven't seen such a poll, i'm sure a poll done on blacks and asians would clock similiar percentages in favour of conservative issues... whites on a whole have a tendency to be more socially liberal than non-whites and that can't be denied.

Latinos tend to be conservative, but are democrats because the republicans panders to xenophobes.

          Good info, AS.

Then there's still some hope for us, after all.

What happened to the days of Humphry and Mondale?
People realized they wanted to have a little control over their lives, instead of having Big Walter breathing down our necks. Not only that, but it seems Minnesotans don't exactly like the politics of appeasement, anymore, either...

we were one of the US's most progressive states untill the last decade. Why are suburbanites falling for conservatism?
Yes, Sharon Sales-Belton (former left-wing mayor of Minneapolis) was doing such a fantastic job in Minneapolis. There's nothing I love more than having beggars and thugs hanging around outside when I'm trying to take a freakin' walk.

I go the cities often, numb-nuts! I am not suburban, either, I live in a small farming community. I like the North Woods and the Big City.

Economic and social liberalism/conservation aren't correlated even though the two-party system forces things to work that way.

Those who are rich tend to be economically conservative (because it helps them economically) but socially liberal (because they are often better educated).

Those who are poor tend to be socially conservative (religious reasons) but economically liberal (want government help).

It is puzzling why the two main parties aren't the Libertarians and the Fundamentalists.

yeah i never understand that but you should mean Libertarians and Populists...

though it should be noted that one of the most successful third parties (aside from the GOP) was the Populists who in the late 19th century seemed to have a good chance of electing William Jennings Bryan but they couldn't mobilize the lower class vote for racial reasons (poor whites who were all for the populist cause otherwise refused to unite with their black brothers and when the party leaders sought black votes and sought to undo the beginnings of jim crow, the party lost nearly all their white support)
