You'd get into a war with the different sub-empires and the state bureacracy, who'd generally try to sabotage you by doing a slow wobble.

There are also a lot of union contractors and big unions that get fat off of state work, so they'd be pissed.

The Republicans would be pissed because I would extract short term tax increases from them.

The Dems would be pissed because I'd ream the trial lawyers association for a start.

Anyway I don't live in California, so I'd be cheering you on to glory.
Glory it ain't. Although in the summer, Sacramento can almost remind you of Mississippi.

    • Sacramento is not that bad, though it's no SD...

As a Repub. I would have no quams with the extraction of short term tax increases as long as there were some actual changes going on that benefited the public.

      • Of all the possible Republican replacements I like Arny the best. He at least isn't a political ideologue.

Tell me about it. I foolishly moved from one to the other.

On the up side in another six months to a year and a half I'll be able to move back to SD and get a good mid-level position. At least that's my plan.

Well, the governor's office itself is nice, in that "put the peons in their place, and show who is the high and mighty one" way.

He probably accounts for about half the air conditioning in the capitol building though, unless they've remodeled it since the last time.

              • Like in Civ when you do bad and like they say you'll be known as, "Ted the Loser," or "Ted the Incompetent."
In Civ I the rating screen said you were "better than the following rulers" of which the lowest was Dan Quayle.

Arnold would do well because what California needs isn't a plan (it's got lots of plans to solve the crisis already) but someone who's got the guts to implement the unpopular things such as tax hikes or service cuts. Unlike the other professional politicians, Arnold's film career gives him something else to fall back on, and also gives him an existing positive image among his fans. When the tax hike hits people would be more likely to blame Davis than Arnold. The same may not be true for the other people.

                • Yeah, MtG, throw your hat into the ring as a Democrat. You just might win as the Republican vote is likely to be badly split.

BTW, it seems like a lot of the same people bashing Davis for his fiscal policy are the same one's giving Bush a pass on his. (not you though MtG)

Show me a candidate with a solution. Everyone can point out the problem.
Well you going to have to wait since only one person that has said he would run for governor is Darrel Issa, but I have not heard much from him yet. One possible candidate that knows a lot about the buget on the republican side but his name escapes me at the moment and he has lots of ideas. One thing is that at this point Sava anyone would do better then Davis with this mess.

People in Cali are so nutty: our governor in NY also told bald faced lies about the impending budget crisis, then the legislature rammed through a budget, he vetoed it, and the next day the legislature overrode his veto..

You guys don;t even know how to pull of croocked politics right!

                        • This could be a real catastrophe for the Republicans. if they run multiple candidates and the Dems run just one. Assume the Dem got 40% of the vote and 4 Republicans split 60%!

In order to make sense out of this, the Republicans need to select just one candidate.

Naah. Cali's so solidly democratic, and the state Republican Party is so broke, that they're not going to back anyone to take over as governor in a disaster. Think about it - the other seven elected state officers are all Dems, as are solid majorities in both legislative houses. There's nothing to gain for the Reps, because even if the mess gets fixed under a new Dem governor, they can still blame the Dems for causing a mess in the first place.

The party is too broke for a governorship to be a steppingstone to the Senate. Feinstein isn't challengeable, and the national party won't subsidize a campaign against Boxer, because she's a great ally for the Republican cause, and Cali campaigning is too damn expensive. If you're on the RNC, the choice between throwing a ton of money into Cali to try and unseat Boxer, or throwing that money into 3-4 small state races for Senate is an easy one.

Damn, that would be funny. California's governors would be perfect to illustrate the list by examples too. Reagan, Brown, Davis and perhaps Ah'nold.
