    Boris:

So the message is not to marry an american feminist? I have no problem with that. There are many women who fit this bill, yet you may not find as many in a university.

    Swithin:

    JUST SAY NO TO PRENUPS!!
An issue all to itself. If you trust the person you will be marrying not to cheat on you, and to stay with you for quite some time, then I would agree with you.

However, many people don't trust their partners, or don't even know them all that well before getting married. They feel a biological imperitive to have children and nothing more, driving them to get married.

That's how marriages go south. Guy marries woman to be his boring housewife and pump out 2 kids. Yeah, that's real grounds for a marriage - 10 years later guy gets bored with housewife with whom he has nothing in common.

And as for this foil hat-wearing colunmnist, his lack of understanding about the oppression of women thoughout the ages is exceedingly vulgar.

He has a couple of decent points, but over all, this columnist is living in a fantasy land. I don't worry about prenups cause I wouldn't cheat...
it has nothing to do with you cheating. she could cheat on you and still take everything you own. esp. if she has a good divorce lawyer.

I would never get married without a pre-nup. If she loves me, she would get it

Yep. When it comes to divorce, it's quite one sided (usually).

actually preferribly I would have a fake marriage. Do the ceremony and rings and all, just don't make it "official"

Call me a romantic, but I think, for the most part, if you feel like you need a prenup, you shouldn't be getting married.

I have to say, the German girls I met definately had a different...well, way of looking at things, for lack of a better term. I tended to find them much more thoughtful than American girls.

Assuming you could fake a marriage (most people are aware that both parties have to sign a marriage license) AND the state you are in has a statutory prohibition on common-law marriages, then your wife would probably prevail on the grounds that she relied on the marriage ceremony in good faith.

Just get a pre-nup, Dis. Of course, watch out because not every state will enforce those. Texas won't, for example (but Texas is also a no alimony/palimony state).

And you probably won't get custody of the kids regardless - you cannot contract around the best interests of the child...

Isn't there something wrong with a gay guy telling strait guys to avoid women?

I think that endorsing such a message is suicidal, in terms of the human race, but it definetly has a point.

I didn't mean a fake marriage as in duping the woman into thinking it is real (though I did hear about a case like that on the radio- not very believable though)

I mean have a ceremony as usual- with reception. But just don't make it official. That way a woman can have her beautiful wedding in front of her friends and family, and her ring binding her love to her husbands. After all, that is what women really want- right? I'm sure they aren't interested in the capability half a man's possessions.
