Nah. The woman in the backstory is stuck-up, if that's how she receives a compliment. Give me someone who knows how to smile, and I'll show you someone in my league.

Dissident, why don't you think girls in your league are not pretty? I think you need to get out more, and find some girls in your league who are pretty.

I'm not much of a flirt -- I'll usually just smile at a pretty girl, which she can either interpret as my being friendly-in-a-non-threatening-way, or as my leering at her (my smile's a bit crooked, which makes it look more lecherous or roguish or whatever). They'll generally interpret it appropriately (e.g., if they wanted me to leer at them then they assume that I'm leering at them), which then leaves the initiation of flirting in their hands. So, I wouldn't have tried flirting with the chick in the first post, but it has nothing to do with the fact that we were in public at the time -- if anything, I'd think that public flirting would be better than private flirting: more awkward, but less threatening and more indicative of self-confidence.

And I agree with Obiwan -- I'd interpret the coldness from chick in the first post as her being stuck-up (unless the guy was blatantly staring at her ass or something).

I once flirted for a couple of minutes with a very attractive Finnish women in a Finnish train... she was probably 7 years older than me too.

I was classy about it though. No drooling.

Plenty of men were blantatly staring at everything on her. Maybe she gets more attention than she cares to get: hoenstly, for NY, the taking it politely was a surprise to me (as opposed to ignoring the man altogether). I found it surprosing becuase I do not think of subway platforms as "flirting space". I assume that people there want to be left alone, specially when moving in or out of the station.

Yeah, I hadn't really thought of that -- there are some places where I just don't expect anybody to talk to me (bus stations, the DMV, etc), and wind up confused and panicked if they just ask me something basic like "do you have a light" or "do you have the time" or whatever. If they said something along the lines of "nice ass" then I'd probably get a nosebleed or something.

I don't ever expect anyone to talk to me so I'm always confused and pancaked.

I've met some nice people that way, just talking to them on the bus.

connorkimbro, naturally I was joking. I'd never do that.. that can leave the person frightened of her/his life and well.. give serious problems to someone. So no.. I'm not that evil .
