Of course, but can you explain the relevance of Linux to this thread?

I never did .

Weren't you the one that brought up Pixar? Pixar = computer animation.
It was an example of how companies sometimes use competitor's products, Steve Jobs prefers Xeons to G5s, even though he'd never put Intel chips in the Apple PCs because it'd remove his stranglehold on the market.
I wasn't using it as an example of OSes or anything.

What does my superior taste in music have anything do with this?

But that's the point. Presumably they will be using Renderman which doesn't run on the Mac. It only runs on Linux and Windows. Why would you buy a Mac unless you want to use the Mac OS? And why would you use the Mac OS if your main application doesn't run on it.

Linux runs on the Mac, too...
And if the G5 really was that good, rest assured they would buy the G5s and make them a Linux cluster like they do for the Xeons.

OK, but if you buy a PowerMac you are paying for the OS and all the installed software. I don't think Apple would discount their new top of the range computer. I really don't see any point in running Linux on the Mac. The whole point of the computer is the OS.
If you just buy a bunch of Dells and install Redhat, it would be cheaper. You wouldn't be paying MS their pound of flesh for a start.

You think if Pixar was going to place a 3,000 special computer order, they'd do it through the Apple Store?
They don't need to get the chips through Apple. IBM makes the chips, they're PowerPC 970s under IBM's name, but it's the same thing. Even if Apple would refuse to sell Pixar (Jobs' OWN COMPANY) 3,000 computers w/o MacOS & keyboards and stuff, Pixar could just go to IBM and say "Build us a cluster of 3,000 PowerPC 970s for cheap", and that's what IBM does...
But they chose Xeons for a reason.
