If that is true, then how come he was the first southerner to hire a black on his staff. Could he have hired blacks on his staff if he were racist? no.

The truth is that he repudiated his racist views. Why can't you give the man credit for turning away from his racist roots?

And dare I remind you that Al Gore's dad voted against civil rights! How come Dems are never challenged for their racist views?
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. There's this saying, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all...

I choose to say nothing in this thread.

That's a blatant misrepresentation of Gore Sr.'s views. He voted against ONE civil rights act, in 1964, but his reasons were not racist in nature, and he subsequnetly repudiate the vote and apologized.

        1. In 1956, Al Gore sr. was one of only two Southern senators who refused to sign the racist Southern Manifesto.
        2. Voted against the Poll Tax of 1942
        3. Voted for Civil Rights Act of 1957
        4. Nominated 2 young black students from Memphis for appointment to US Air Force Academy - risky in Tennessee in 1957
        5. Voted for 1965 Voters Rights Act
        6. 1968 Fair Housing Act
        7. Al Gore Sr. apologized for his 1964 vote and called it a big mistake. He said he was concerned that it went to far to fast and would be used to cut off funding of schools who appeared to be in violation.

This is not the voting record of a racist.

Dems are challenged for their racism. Byrd is still tied to being in the KKK, despite his repudiation of it. And Thurmond WAS a Democrat, as were dozens of racist politicians who joined the GOP. Now I ask, why is it the most virulently racist Southern Dems jumped to the Republican party?

Ah Holy Warrior, Apolyton's very own version of Ann Coulter, minus her penis.

I suggest you read the thread and my posts and re-evaluate your above statement.

And then find any point where the posters you mentioned defended or even expressed a liking for Mr. Byrd.

Now wipe the froth from your mouth and go back to the trailer.

As said before... Thurmond was beaten in the governor's race in 1950 because he hired a black physician to the medical board. He also was the first Senator to hire a black aide. He backed the bill making Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a national holiday. And the guy that wrote a Thurmond biography (Jack Bass, quoted earlier by Sava) says that he thinks Strom was embarrassed by his past.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
                - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

                    • So they finally retired the animatronic puppet that has impersonated ol' Strom ever since he shuffled off this mortal coil back in 1986?
