  • Thurmond's dead

My hopes for the Dole-Thurmond ticket are forever dashed.

Was he still holding office? If so then the dems now have a +2 seat advantage.

First, no he wasn't still in office.

Second, even if he were, the Dems would still be down, as the Senate is 52-48

Can't say that I'm sorry about it... but I pay my respects.

Last I heard the senate was 50-49 with one independent. I guess they lost seats in the last election.

The upside to the Republicans haveing both houses and the executive is that there will be no one else to blame for the ****ing mess they make of the country.

As I said in my ill-fated thread, rest in peace, Strom.

bullsh1t... I'd dance on his grave if I ever get a chance. What's mean is the racist policies he advocated. And if I were a betting man, I'd bet that he played a part in at least one lynching in his life. May he burn in hell.

I was totally bamboozled by the name. NEVER heard of Thurmond before now.

If we had an elected politician in office at that age he would be seen as a dramatic failure. Elected pols generally get "booted" upstairs to the House of Lords (Senate equivalent, kind of, in a real unelected sense).

100 and still in office? HOW?

Thurmond thoroughly repudiated his racist stances, and I have to respect his career as a lawmaker representing his state and his impact on American politics. He was, by all accounts, the greatest gentleman in the Senate.

Don't confuse him with Jesse Helms.
