Not to sound heartless or anything, /me sips on some blood , but having someone commite suicide is none's fault but their own. Unless you have tortured them or destroyed their lives or anything. Breaking up with someone doesn't really qualify though.

his suicide wasn't your fault, although i must admit that i'm somewhat surprised you weren't aware of how unbalanced he was. i suppose that's only natural, though, in a long distance relationship.

as for those who call you a coward or what not-- i doubt they know the whole story, and that's what they're basing it on. it sucks, probably hard to ignore, but it'll be there for a while, it sounds like.

what's worse is that on the path to recovery, the good days are fragile and anything can knock you back off the horse.

Thanks to the guys who gave me sympathy: QCubed, Boris, paiktis22, and others in this thread.

I guess Slowwhand was insensitive the way he initially put his thoughts -- it hurt, until I realized he agrees with me that breaking up over the phone should be avoided unless the situation does not allow any other option.

A couple of days after I broke up with him, but before his suicide, we talked for one last time on the phone for over an hour while I was still in Ecuador. I told him I appreciated all the things he did for me (helping me start college, encouraging me), and that I could not stop caring for him, or loving him (although the love would be different). It was a good talk, but alas, it did not prevent Mark from making an awful choice.

Yeah -- I knew at the time that breaking up in person was the best way -- if it was possible at that time.

Anyway, I have felt a lot better than I did the past couple of days -- and at least after returning home two years ago from Ecuador, I found true friends -- ones I will probably keep for a lifetime even after I move for graduate school this fall.

I would appreciate if one of the moderators would close this thread now.
