    Yeah I guess so.. huh..

You see my idea does work! Force is a good answer to crushing rebel groups like the FARC. More force must be applied.

Fumigation/erradication/force/the drug war in general, isn't going to solve the drug problem....as long as there's demand, people will find ways to sell it and to buy it....what GePap said already, basically.

The key is to take the production from the mafia types, by making drugs legal the distribution will then be done by corporations rather than thugs.

I am against all legalization, it won't work.

It won't solve all the problems, and it'd have to begin gradually and in the US first (of course), but legalization could make the situation much better....in theory.

I think you might have an easier time killing the coffee supply.

while this is certainly good news, in some senses, there isn't a military solution to colombia's civil war. the government may have some success in pushing back the rebels, but in the end there will have to be a negotiated settlement.

Indeed. What Colombia needs isn't necessarily brute force. It is a group of determined leaders. Uribe looks determined, and I hope he'll manage to make Columbia on the right track, with a mix of better force (there seems to have been many betterments in the Colombia police and army according to the article) AND pragmatism / negociation.

This guy seems genuinely interested in cleaning the Colombian mess. Thumbs up to that

It's far more logical and feasible to kill the demand.

Were the U.S. and others among the major consumers of drugs to decriminalize and regulate, the drug cartels would be out of business in weeks. Thus would end the rebel funding.

                              Boris is right.

Drug Dealers and moralist fundies are on the very same side when it comes to drug legalization. And I'm sure the maffias have made a more efficient lobbying than moralistic groups on the issue

From lawsuits? I can almost see it now. It'd make the tobacco lawsuits look insignifigant.
