Yeah, the next pass is not supp0sed to be close, hence we'll have another bummer in 60 years. But we will have a bright pass in 136 years. People like Halley because it is the brightest comet one can see twice in his/her lifetime.

BTW, Twain was born in a Halley year. he said he would die in the 1910 pass and he did.

Hale-Bopp was spectacular. I have a photograph at my parent's house which my best friend took when he and I went to Yellowstone while Hale-Bopp was at its brightest. We went to see old faithful right at the beginning of twilight and he snapped a couple of quick pictures of the guiser as it went off. After we got home he developed the film and realized he'd taken a picture with the guiser going off with an unbelievably large & bright comet in the background and with the sky all purple and red tinted.

He says it was the best picture of his life and he just took it without thinking.

Maybe this is not just a coincidence. Civ's, Settlers, X-Coms etc came out years ago when there was a first really big international computer and gaming boom going on. I mean a huge boom, in about 91-94. Those were the hot games then, strategy games etc, and they were wildly popular, since computers then couldn't handle flashy graphics or 3D, and the first person shooters were just about to come, but they weren't such a huge hit they are today and from the first Doom and so forth.

So, it is only natural that little older people played them as they were and still are good games. I still enjoy old games very much and I have bunch of them and never plan on selling them. So, kids at the early 90s started very much to be into computers, as it gained more acceptance and didn't necessarily mean super nerd image. Well a little nerdie image was almost sure, but it wasn't a huge stigma, as Bill Gates etc were known as huge money makers, and money makers are always cool.

So, games weren't THAT many back then, and big games like Civ's and so on were popular amongts even kids, and we grew up with them, and when internet came more popular, we came here. So, I think that explains why the class of 1980/81/etc is so heavily introduced here. That also explains, why older people too have found their way here, but not so much younger kids (under 17-18). When they were in the age of finding computers, there already were fast processors, graphic devices etc and lots of games to choose from. Especially first person shooters, sports games, car games.. so they stick with those games. Also there are new strategy games that kids find more interesting. They most often first notice 'this looks like crap', because graphics were not like they are today. They want both good idea with the game as well as it looking good.
To us these old games still looks good (at least to me) and it doesn't make us run for our lives, but feel nostalgic or at least more patient to see what the game is really about and judge it after that.

So no.. I don't think it's just a coincidence.

So when they came out, we played those games. But kids that were too young couldn't understand them, and sometimes we really had to learn to understand them too but it was all fun. Internationally, in early 90s we 20+ could understand english just fine, it might have been little difficult, but they were good, educating all the time. Younger kids however could not handle the english so that they could have enjoyed those games, internationally thinking.
Also kids today want to have a game they can start playing right away and not have to learn too much as it takes time and they want action. Back then there really wasn't that much to choose from, so it was all good. Also in the late 80s early 90s came the consoles (Sega 8bit, Nintendo 8bit) competing with the computers (Amiga, PC), and few years went on and it was more cooler to play with game consoles, and they weren't that expensive comparing to PCs if you only wanted to play with it. They were heavily marketed and bought their places in kids hearts. No strategy gaming in game consoles that much. They never lost their popularity, and today we have PS2 and what not. That pretty much set the trend to play the game, not think too much about it but just get it on.


There are more reasons too that could have affected this, but I'm too tired to type long posts now, but you get the idea.

Halleys wasn't bad in the southern hemisphere. My first memory, in fact. Is it any wonder I'm a physicist? By contrast, Hale-Bopp (I THINK that was it) was the fuzzy, unimpressive one - I saw that over the Grand Canyon. That was one surreal night.
