Sure, but you gotta remember, who do you think the troops are going to respect more?

The guy who's been in the service 20+ years, or the guy straight outta College (now, some Officers may be prior enlisted).
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Only if the O-1 is really stupid, or the E-9 is a jerk.
In the Navy or other branches, an 0-1 is a second Lt. or Ensign and is just out of school or OCS and has really no experience. On the other hand, the E-9 is Master Chief Petty Officer/Chief Master Sarg., with about 15 or more years in before he/she can make E-9. I think you can make E-9 in the Army in less time. Someone correct me on the Army, Air Force, Marines.

Anyway, I enlisted in the Air Farce. Had enough college credits to qualify for E-2, but since I got a medical discharge before I left for boot camp, it doesn't make any difference.

          • Paygrade: 3 dollars per day. Enjoyed every penny of it.
            Service: Finnish Defence Forces.
Job/Rank: Sergeant. Training privates from dressing properly to shooting to combat and the works, training Corporal students who specialize in communication and electronic warfare and little wrestling too, 2nd in command in AA artillery thingie (don't know what you call it, but not the whole battery thing anyway) after lieutanent (in charge if he dies, does all the work since he's always away anyway in training), plus some other stuff which are not of importance, and the ones I have sweared not to tell outsiders .
Most Interesting Duty Station: All boring. The place where Corporal Course took place was pretty interesting. It wasn't that cozy, hence I loved it.
Story: Hmhh.. Lots of stories, but I'm too lazy to post any right now. Maybe later.

              • I used to work as a cvilian at an army base and my experiance was that the junior officers were called sir by the warrant officers. But it was usually along the lines of Sir can you go and do something now please. the junior officer would say yes sergeant major.

                  True.

A more accurate statement would be about the pampered doofuses that come out of the state university ROTC programs.

We had this guy named Lt. Cloud I once convinced that we desperately needed "black-out drive oil" one night on a training exercise.

The "black out drive" being a little light on the front of a vehicle to allow night vision googles to be effective for the driver, IIRC. It needs no oil.

This a-hole spent about a half hour on the radio calling around to the supply area and rear support for the oil. The supply guys played along and said it was on back order but they'd send it up as soon as it came in.

Forever afterward he was known as "Lt. Cloud-Nine".

( Our military is based on the British in the ranks. So is yours, probably).

When I end college, I'll go to Officer school, and It seems I'll end up a Leutenant. (O-2, I guess )

                    • But in combat, there are, AFAIK, very little or no highranking sergeants. They usually are in combat-supporting forces.

                      • I htink it would take a brave 2nd Lt to contradict his staff sergeant.

Every company of infantry in the UK has a sergeant major(warrant officer class2) I think they would have a combat role.

Is it because the Iraeli army promotes idiots away from areas they could cause any problems
