My cousin tried explaining this to me but I didn't understand.

Whats the difference between a commission and a non-commissioned person?

My cousin was talking all military speak so I didn't understand a word he said.
Commisioned types can eventually hold a command. noncomissioned would by CPO's, NCO's, and Warrent Officer's. Warrents are refered to as "Sir" below them and as "Warrent" babove them.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Perhaps Lonestar talking about some analogy to: Offizier - Unteroffizier ?

Sorta. In the USN Chief Petty Officers (E-7+) more or less "really run the navy". Chief Warrent Officers are saluted and called "Sir", but they're kinda a gray area between enlisted and "real" commissioned officers.

I think Enlisted is non-officer(sergeant) ranks, and Commissioned are officer ranks.

If all things will go as planned, I'll end up a 1st Leutenant in the IDF.

Not in the "Eyes" of the UCMJ...and thats what really counts!

But I guess your speaking of those whom went to the Academy to get their commissions?

Or even the NROTC and OCS types. Chief warrents in the Navy...come from E-7+. So they'd been an enlisted person for quite awhile before hand.

I haven't had any military experience. Lots of my relatives have. Are we listing that as well?

                    No.

But feel free to ask questions.

From what Lonestar said, a Sergeant in the Royal Norwegian Army is about the same as US Warrant Officer, or German Unteroffizier. It's lowest rank which has to be saluted, but we would not say "sir" We just say their rank.

Often we don't care saluting at all, cause we rarely respect them.
They went to academy, and we were just conscripts, you know.

I found myself two nice rules:
I respect all those who respect me.
I salute all those who salute me.
My words are backed with hard coconuts.

                          Depends on where you are...

Btw, some recruits even salutes corporals.

Thats correct...the point that they come from enlisted..but NROTC and OCS should indeed teach basic Military Structure..O-1 & W-1, O-2 & CWO-2, O-3 & CWO-3 and O-4 & CWO-4 all hold same paygrade and all hold "Officer Ranking". True a person whom went to an Academy come by it from scratch BUT..in the eyes of the UCMJ..that being the governing body for ALL Military branches..not through a bunch of wanna-B's -yet-to-be-commissioned NROTC or OCS.

My point is that they are officers and I have more respect for the person than the rank.

                            I had a hard time stomaching a "Butter-bar" 2nd Lt. leading a group of 15-20 year veterans...

But, I accepted because its what the UCMJ instructed me to.

Not being argumentative just purely speaking on fact:

A Warrant "Officer" is not in a greay area.. he/she holds that distinction.."Officer"

                            Peace

                              Paygrade: E-7, Sergeant First Class

                              Service: United States Army (Retired)

                              Service Dates: 10 June 1980 - 01 February 2001.

Job: 96B - All Source Intelligence Analyst (Military Intelligence).

Most interesting Duty station: The Warrior Preparation Center, Einsiedlerhof Air Station (Kaiserslautern), Germany. A very cool place to work - I actually got paid to play computer wargames!

Claim to Fame: Let's see...there have been many accomplishments during my military career...but I guess the one that stands out is while I was stationed with the 3rd Special Forces, I created/wrote a self-contained humanitarian operations scenario that was accepted by the International Red Cross as a basis for training personnel in humanitarian relief operations.

Oh, and also being a homosexual and not getting caught during my 20+ year career!
