Tassadar, tell your son, the US-army is for lamers and pussies only.no risk, no fun. if he wants to find out, what being a soldier really means, he should join the Russian, Indonesian, Turkish or whatever real army.
      justice is might

        hi ,

nothing , why risk a break of family ties by saying no , .....

as a parent you should support him , no matter what choice he makes , ....

who knows , he might get to west point or so , ... or become a navy seal , ....

there are many jobs in the army that he can do , .....

better to support him then to see him running of to the french foreign legion or so in three years , .....

          OK...
My first post related to Kirill SHmatko, who died in his security service in Israel, while his parents were in Russia. Second post is parody on Russian hymn. The parody explains glory of GULAG (Concetration camps and prisons)

            Interesting thread, Tass.

Shi, Tass claimed to be a father - he didn't claim to be a good one.

            Tass- (Sorry, couldn't resist).

            But seriously...

"But his behavior is so reckless....He'll suddenly stop doing his schoolwork or chores or talk back or go to a friends house without informing me.....I don't see how I can trust him."

Trust him to do what, exactly?

To do things that you want? In the way that you want them done?

It's not your life, Tassadar, and if you were in any society other than the industrial, wealthy West, your son would be considered old enough to make this decision regardless of your wishes. Consider it a lucky twist of fate that your son is conditioned to think that your opinion still matters.

First, determine whether this is an actual desire to enter the military, or an unspoken weariness with the idea of ... 6... more... years... of... school.... It could be that he just wants to avoid college. One thing that might be appealing is that in the Army he'll have somebody to tell him what to do.

The military, if done right, is a fine initial career choice for any young man or woman and frankly should not be discouraged... but it should be guided, and that's where you come in.

First, look at the various services to determine their requirements and compatibility with your son: don't join the army if you don't like being outside, that sort of thing.

Then look at the difference between enlisted and officers and determine what would be a better fit. I know that if this was my daughter, I would be pushing hard for her to enter the military as an officer, meaning that I would have her sign up on a program where she enters for a stint after she finishes school. When I went to school back in the late 80s, it was possible to sign up for the military after high school, but not join the active forces until you were finished with college.

Your son can always do ROTC as well. Does the high school have a branch?

              Tass :

If your kid seems to do it because he is rebellious or wants to leave "his idiot old man" or something, I came to think you should discuss about it with him.

A one-sided discussion, but not the usual one. A one sided discussion from him to you. You have to make abundantly clear that you are interested in why he wants to do so, you have to look genuinely interested in his opinion and his worldview.

Listen carefully to what he says, and think about it throughly.

You'll be able to understand what he expects from the army (most likely, more freedom, you seem to coddle him quite a bit). Fulfill these expectations yourselve, or create the conditions so that they are fulfilled, and he won't go.
Especially if you talk about your own military experience and about the ****ers who believe they are gods because they have a mere golden thread on their uniform.

Good luck. I never figured you for the type to go to a service academy. The first year is going to suck. Hang in there.

A good liberal indeed considers that orgies and mindless sex with unknown people should be the only way a relationship should take place. I'm a bad liberal as I tolerate meaningful relationships
