UNSC passes lifting of sanctions on iraq by 14-0 this AM. Allows iraqi oil to flow, accepts US and UK as "authority" in Iraq, encourages all countries to help with reconstruction and peacekeeping, establishes "central role" for UN, defers question of Iraqi debt.

Thanks to all who made this possible.

Okay! I, for one, will now swear off the French bashing!

Let's hope this trend of co-operation continues.

I think the French realized that if they're ever gonna see one Euro of debt repaid to them, they'd better accept the status quo, i.e. the UK and US control Iraq. Besides, there was no way Iraq was going to be able to pay anything until the oil started flowing again. French delays only resulted in delaying the debt repayments.

Now it is up to the US and UK to ensure that the France's trust is well placed.

France attempted to make last minute oil deals w/ Saddam hoping that they could force the contracts on any new Iraqi government.

Unfortunately, Lancer, your statements hove not been shown to be true. watching Fox has been detrimental to your intellectual health.

EDIT: I changed the wording in fairness to Lancer... he isn't wrong per se... just not proven true.

of course once they get to discussing iraq again, they have to PASS something, or this resolution remains in force. We now have precedent for western powers using vetoes against each other

Actually, I suspect you are wrong. Now that Bush's and Cheney's boys are allowed to start feeding at the trough, there's no official reason left to hate the French. I'm guessing a period of silence where the words "France" and "French" are never mentioned followed by a gradual return the pre-war relationship. To save face, Chirac will also have to tone down the rhetoric.

As Lancer proves; the anti-France rhetoric has made a lasting effect on the minds of the sheepish Americans. It won't go away. So I think somebody will have to come up with another reason to justify the hatred.

It's good to see Chirac has finally given in and accepted reality. Still, he is the main person to blame for all of the discord.

And America has what right to Iraq's oil again?...

Let's see...The resolution clearly states that the revenue shall be used exclusively for the Iraqi people and Nation. That must mean that your post was:

For rebuilding Iraq. As I have been saying, that money must come from the US pocket.

As for cooperation, it is more like a case of compliance with the US, for fear of economic consequences. Nonetheless, the US now has a free hand to see the glut of Saddams stockpiled oil sold, reducing global oil prices, so US companies can negotiate contracts at much lower prices to them.

This resolution does nothing to justify or legitimise the war, and as for the presence of foreigners of Iraqi soil, well, lets leave the Iraqis to legitimise that. Would appear that the opposite has been happening lately. I honestly think the Americans expected the Iraqis to welcome them, which did happen initially, but would seem that this is not the case now....
