Speer is not making this up. White beauty remains the ideal: look at someone like Halley Berry. She is black, but her features aren't very "black", in the sense we think of them, like the nose, the hair, and even here skin tone, which is lighter.

This ideal is not posted all over as it used to be, but it remains.

You're creating something out of nothing. What about Pam Grier? In her prime, she was considered a standard of beauty. Even Venus Williams is considered by some to be a beautiful woman. As Slowwy said, "To each his own".
To us, it is the BEAST.

I think Halle Barry proves that mediterreneans are the standard of beauty not blue-eyed blondes... she looks more like an Italian or a Spaniard than like a Swede.

GePap: I agree that facial features of white ( and to some extent, east Asian ) people still are considered the ideal, But there is a reason to that. Those features are more "feminine" and therefor, have more potential to attract man. That's why they're called attractive.

As to skin colour, it is true that a VERY dark skin is not considered to be the ethalon of beauty. But it's the same with compeltely white skin, and due to the same reason. These "radical" tones have a weakness, and that is that body and facial features are less recognizeable. Of course you can still easily recognize the individual, but their mental image in your brain is less vivid, it has less contrasts.

            Azazel:

what you described then would show that the white, blue-eyed blonde ideal is untrue as it is too pale, but rather the tan meditterenean appearance is actually society's ideal so when certain people complain of the nordic standard being forced down the throats of children, they are wrong... it's the Italian, Hispanic, etc. standard.

To be totally honest, as is my habit, I do have certain things I prefer in a woman.

                Ideally, she'll have hair.
                Eyes are nice to have.
                Legs must reach the floor.

Usually, it's not, since those people get some tan, naturally, so facial features are quite well seen, while completely black people don't get paler.

"blue-eyed" is not that big of a turn on, but it has some advantages as well, e.g. you see the black spot more clearly, which makes the eyes more complex, and "enchanting".

                    Pekka:

i dont know if you got people in Finland talking about this (i doubt it) but here in the US, there always seems to be people who whine that society (from magazines, television, the media, movie industry, or just people as a whole) are forcing an image of the nordic appearance as the standard of beauty. supposedly, everyone tries to fulfill this standard for fear of being ugly and thus disdain their true appearance and their ethnic groups...

if such a standard exists, i fail to see how it is a blue-eyed blonde standard... it seems so obviously to be a mediterrenean standard for the reasons i said in the first post... why do people blame the nordic look? is it just white people bashing?

                    thanks

I don't think that society forces standards of "what is a nice looking man" on women, or "what is a nice looking woman" on men. People clearly make those choices by themselves.

Society does have a role in creating conceptions that are sometimes wrong, about how a person should look to be healthy and attractive.

Speer, We don't have that discussion.. lots of whining about everything but not that.. Except we DO have forever going 'society and fashion is making girls puke after dinners so they look like models' etc etc.. But I bet you have that too. But other than that.. not really. So the beauty discussion here is about dieting and losing weight to look like you're starving, and then about clothes. People like J-Lo etc do give huge directions as to what young girls etc want to wear, but that's wear, beucase they can never look like her, being ethnically different to begin with, so we don't even discuss that. In the US it might be different for sure since you have every race there and so on.. Ok I understand this better now.

Speer, but at the same time we can appreciate exotic looks (exotic to us), since we don't see that every day in the streets . But we don't have pressures about what's beautiful ethnically speaking.

Those features are in no way more 'feminine'. Longer necks than males, the hip to waist ration, these things are obviously female characteristics, but not nose shape. Certainly there are some groups of humans I do not find attractive at all (aborigenes), but it is still rahter easy to make out the males form the females, and it has nothing to do with thin noses.

But Halle Berry is supposed to be "Black", not "Mediterranean"

I think the dark tall handsome man stereotype comes because "washed out" guys, let's face it, look gay.

And women want men not women. They want men who look like men.

That's where the stereotypeof the mediterenean man comes from. French Italian Greek lovers etc.

Of course nothing's absolute and beauty exists in all combinations.

On a side note, apart from the ancient Greek ideal of beauty, the most recent one to my knowledge is a french doctrine of the 18 or 19 century where the author specifies with excrusiating detail what is the perfection of beauty (even cm of nose diagrams etc)
