Yep. That was a bit over the top. To be fair though, in that exchange HO and I had the EU engaged in global nuclear warfare with the Russians and the Yanks. I think a lot of it was over the top.

The French people are fine. It's been their leaders that have been letting them down. Repeatedly. Seriously, how are their 'allies' supposed to take them when their leaders go around slapping each in the face in turn?

Not intending anylonger to convince anybody, I just recall the main dates of the French decolonization :

1954 Viet Nam
1960 Central Africa
1962 Algeria

All were done under the pressure of reality (last two by De Gaulle). Considering what happens after, I cant see how the Frenchs could be angry against the US because of that. At least, that makes another important subject on which De Gaulle agreed with the Americans.

It trully amazes me that garbage threads like this (didn't start like this, but turned into one right quick) can last so long! The geenral bias, ignorance, prejudice, its all just so amazing!

They all seem to work the same way: a group of self-righteous rightwingers get themselves nicely worked up on an anti-french froth, then some fool thinks they can reason with these people, and then it just degrades from there. These threads are always the same, and they lead to the same end, nowhere. i guess if this is how people want to waste energy, well, its thier business.

And in the long span of history, this little spat will mean as much as the Fashoda affair. (hmmm, what was that?)
