We handed Indochina back to the French because we felt that France needed to retain their empire in order to better resist communism. Britain didn't decolonize because it wanted to do so. In Palestine, in India, in Africa, in Malaysia, Britain was faced with anti-colonial struggles. Half of Britain's overseas troops were in Palestine. Israel was Britain's "Vietnam" and there was simply no way they could hold on to India if they decided to stop listening to Ghandi, so they just cut the best deal they could get.
