  • Are you 'yes' man?

If someone asks you favours, do you keep doing them without anyone ever returning them back? Man, I'm so tired of helping out other people even when they are my buddies or relatives.

Basically they all make good money on their jobs, and yet they call me everytime when they need some tech support. They think I enjoy 30 minute drives with expensive gas and no income to come and fix their crap.
Just today I was in one of my relatives work to help fix their network which they once again managed to crash.I told that I'm tired and I won't come. Well, apparentely they were in a middle of very important work due to tomorrow, and they can't close some deal if they don't get it working because all their work is now stuck. Their PAID tech support was in vacation, and it would have been super expensive to hire outside help there, because the firm is located nowhere near civilization, and problems being big. No worries! I'll be there, just let me put my clothes on I don't care what time it is, I'll come there right away! Don't worry!

I thought I'd have to help them out, because I was their only hope and they are a business, tomorrow important thing and I can't complain, I'd be buttface if I didn't help. So I drive over there, nothing working. Well I work with the computers all day in HOT offices with no AC or windows. Sweating like a pig I crawl under the tables only to get some fat boss breathing in my neck, who by the way is not MY boss and who I'm helping because I decided to help out of my own time. 'Is it working yet?' 'If you brake something, you have to pay' 'when is this going to work?' 'do you even know what you're doing?' Yeah? F U TOO!

So after just 5 hours everything is working perfecto, and I even configured there personal e-mail settings to every computer because their tech support was too lazy, and may I add I installed those CD-Rs to 4 computers which tech support was too lazy to do also.
So I'm busting my butt off there for them, because they needed my help. I wasn't there for money, but god damn I was expecting that they would compensate with at least little token for my time and effort. What did I get? NOTHING! Not even cup of coffee. These jerks where drinking coffee and eating snacks while I was working and they didn't even bother to ask me if I wanted any. Thanks for nothing! Sure, it would have been hella expensive to make some tech guy come there urgently and work for whole day in emergency. I wasn't expecting to get $400 out of it. But maybe $10 for dinner at least. Shhiiieet.. if I go crazy one day, I know one place I'll burn down.
    In da butt.

I figure if I hadn't come, they couldn't have finished their work, thus being unable to do the representing they are doing tomorrow and losing lots of money. Right? So I might be little selfish, but I think some of that money tomorrow they get is because I helped them, and without that it would have been impossible. So, maybe something little appreciation would have been nice, I wasn't asking anything, or wanted anything big, but god damn something even free t-shirt or something. Plus I don't have savings or money in my pocket, so.. but hey it's good to abuse people who are willing to help, because it's free. It's good business. Doesn't cost a cent.
Maybe a handshake and a smile? Maybe discount of their products? F*ing nothing!

I am sure they though that you would be offended of their giving a tip because you did that just for help !

          Stefu, we are fools .

I also want to say, that I applied for job there a year ago, didn't get it. So what do I think of them now? I really don't like them and I'm not afraid to say it. I don't like them.

My friends and relatives do that to me too, but they at least buy me lunch or dinner.

That was dumb. You had them by their collective neck, and you could have make some demands. Like turn on the AC, buy you lunch, stop breathing down your neck or you'd quit, pay for your petrol, things like that.

DAVOUT, sure, but how about compensate the travel cost? Or just even a god damn handshake with a smile? How about coffee? these people were not handling the situation very nicely, even though they might have had pressures about tomorrow, they could have thought about my feelings too, I'm human too.

Business is business. You have to tell them, before doing anything, for that job I want so much. They agree or not, but nobody is disappointed. You have nothing to loose, and they get the job done for a fair price if they agree.

Do not expect people to behave correctly if they have no obligation; some will behave well, but most will omit.

UR, well if I'd be realistic, I could have been looking about $600 plus configurations AND installing hardware and softwares to them, and that's extra. Plus I did drive there with gas that is more than $4 dollars per gallon to middle of nowhere. But hey, the work itself and the knowledge they can proceed for tomorrows deals should be enough for me, right? Yeah..

I didn't actually read your post. I just answered 'yes', because, hell, in a thread titled like that, there's gotta be one guy who posts an one-word reply, 'yes'. 's like a law of nature.

You weren't helping an individual, you were helping a company. So yes, you should bargain some sort of compensation beforehand. You don't need to rack them over a fire, but still, getting what you feel is fair is important.

DAVOUT, business IS business sure. But I think keeping everyone happy if possible is good business. Why treat people this way? Are they expecting my help next time? I'm telling you, travel expenses and maybe lunch, coffee when they had some and then handshakes and everyone being happy and thanking me woudl have been enough. Then next time, I could come and help again when they have emergency.
'if you brake it, you'll have to pay for it' YEAH SURE! Nice one. As if...

plus, I believe in helping others, that it gives lots of chances in future, don't close the doors. So I was trying to talk little with the boss like 'so why can't you call your tech support and make him come here? this is emergency, don't you have any backup plans for these situations?' 'Yes but it's very expensive, but you're doing good work so we're happy with this solution' 'Ok.. I once applied this job btw a year ago or so' 'Yeah I remember' 'So... any openings coming soon?' 'No'.
                          Yeah. thanks for nothing.

UR, Yeah. But it was my relatives work place, so I did it. If it was some company just calling me 'hey wanna help' I wouldn't do it
My relative holds a small place there so.. I was mostly thinking I'm helping him too. But those other bastards, they were like 'cool, relatives helping, we don't need to appreciate it at all! Let's just drink coffee and take brakes and let him sweat'.
