LTEC!, who posts here, is my wife. Tijuana has some very nice areas (houses for US $1 million+ ), and some real dregs, but the proximity to the border is essential for me. If I lived further down the coast, or elsewhere in Mexico, I'd be cut off from access to US energy and gas markets, which is where I make my living. Over here in Playas, I get out of the ugly area, but still have access to reasonable housing (and you can't beat it when you have a two-year old, there's a small city park right across the street, and it's a residential neighborhood, so pretty much locals only), and it's coastal climate, easy access to everything, greener than most of Tijuana, and quiet. Tourists mostly end up seeing the crap downtown and in the tourist areas, so it's easy to conclude the entire city is the same kind of thing, but it isn't - there's both a lot better and a lot worse, depending on where you go.
