  • Well I'm glad I'm not the only one that was confused into an earlier date by this globe. Hey GP, if you still have it find it, I'd like to start a collection.

      • Since the shapes of countries and borders seem grossly inaccurate in at least some cases, those are IMO not a good thing to focus on. Names, capitals and existance/non-existance/colonial status of countries seems more reliable, in this case.

But yeah, 1945-1947 sounds pretty accurate to me as well.

        • I've got a globe from the 1920s... It's pretty cool with marked lines for zepelins and stuff

That's way cool. Can you give us a pic?

              • I would if I had any way to take a picture of it
Haven't got any kind of digital camera or webcam at all I'm afraid

Come to think of it I am not sure it is from the 1920s, could be from the 1930s as well.

There are both Zepelin lines and someting called "Flugboote" lines marked on it (the globe is in Swedish mostly but it says Zeppelinflüge and Flugboote in German for some reason), as well as a lot of lines I suppose would be normal shiping routes.
For instance I could tell from it that you could take a zeppelin from Nuremberg to New York via Dover.

                • Henrik, your killing me, get a damn webcam. Seems like we have another globe that could use some dating.

                  • If/when I get a webcam I'll take some pics and start a thread here, that might be far off into the future though

It can't be after 1949, cause Transjordan changed it's name to Jordan in '49 after annexing the West Bank.

So around 48-49 is my guess (though, of course, there's some wiggle room cause it's always possible the maker of the globe didn't bother to take into account the latest changes)

                        • Like I said in page 3 (I have 50 p/p), It can't be after 1947, since Finland still has eastern Karelia, and IIRC Germany was officially divided into east and west in... 1948?

                          • Exactly... my guess is still 1947 .

                            • You guy saying that it "can't be after..." are assuming that the map some guy in a factory in Bryan, OH was working from was current or even accurate! That may be a bit of a stretch. He could have cut and pasted a couple of different old maps to get it to fit correctly in 1963 for all we know.
