I was cautious about giving away info before and still am.
Without a proper feedback from PAL, I do not like gifting away, the layout of almost the complete continent, the starting positions of three civs, including two, which they have not even met yet (does this not screw up our "yellow civ" agreement with Templars), the availability or non-availability of strategic resources, our current build, potential sea food resources in the channel, which they might not have spotted yet (although this is rather hard to see), etc.
And why the urge to team up with PAL so early. We have not met Rabbits and Banana. All three of them have a similar standing currently with a second city up and running (in fact PAL is whipping their capital like crazy. Do we want to associate us with tyrants???).
I can see the point in having an ally on the other side of the channel, but I believe we do not have to fix that issue quite that early.
After some consideration, I can also see the point Zeviz mentioned in his post about cheating.

reply from whiplash ...
Hi Realms Beyond Team
The people of PAL are delighted to meet your fine civilization.
We think it be a big boost for both teams if we start coordinating research, to minimize duplication.
Also we could give each other information regarding, the positions of other teams.
All this is subject to further discussions, but would you guys like to work with us to progress both nations?
We believe working with you guys makes sense, as there is no military threat. Often swapping technology with your neighbors can be as much of a danger as it can be a benefit.

Excellent, that's exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to hear.
I would like to see our team seriously discuss the issue of exchanging map info with PAL. If our two teams were the sole ones with complete maps of the two continents, think what a major advantage that would be!
We should also mention in our next message that working together on tech research sounds like a good idea, although of course neither of us will have Alphabet tech for some time. Like I said before, if two teams work together they will always beat teams that are going their own way as individuals. The game Diplomacy (and logical exercises like the prisoner's dilemma) have demonstrated that many, many times over.

so, draft response ...
Whiplash,
Great! This is exactly what we were hoping you would suggest. Our team would like to work with your team towards our mutual benefit. We are having some internal discussion regarding the 'legality' or 'morals' of map exchange while not having the in-game tech for map exchange. Does your team have any views regarding this?
Regarding tech 'sharing', obviously this is more long term as neither of us has alphabet yet. What are you proposing? Something starting now, after alphabet, other? How would we equate the exchange: tech for tech, beaker for beaker, other?
Cheers ... etcQuote: "All Happiness is the release of internal pressure"

Sounds good.
I'd drop a reference to 'morals' and remove quotes around 'legality', because I don't consider this to be a moral dilemma. If rules say it's ok, it's ok. If rules say it's not ok, it's not ok. So the sentence would look like this: "We are having some internal discussion regarding the legality of map exchange while not having the in-game tech for map exchange."

No further contact with PAL. We have discussed a tech trading agreement with them (but no details) and as we are set on Iron Working in our future. I'll draft an email talking about an Iron Working / Alphabet trade as a starting point.
subject (Tech Trading: Initial Suggestion)
Bob,
Our current tech selection has us heading towards Iron Working. To initialize our agreement, we would like to propose an Iron Working (base cost = 350) / Alphabet (base cost = 300) trade with your team.
Looking forward to your feedback / comments.
