  • Here's the current status:

Found where the install package for SP2 was hidden on my notebook. Installed it. (Took quite a while)

Noticed that it was no longer saying I was connected to secure networks I wasn't.

Norton's Anti Virus sugested that I turn off SP2's redundanat security, I let it do so.

It immedately found other updates that had previously downloaded onto my notebook. Installed them.

Out of time that evening, just checked and saw it remembered who my favorite open wireless provider is and in addition the GUI for it is new + it's clicked to auto connect to them would I come within range while not auto connecting to anyone else. (That would be the correct settings for me)

My notebook is in my car; it does need a few more patches because it hadn't previously downloaded the driver fix for SP2 that allow it to be turned off without removing the batery , but hopefully it will connect this evening.

    • Here's the new status:

      1. I'm typing this on my notebook using the wireless network.
      2. The windows update of 4 Critical SP2 patches, 2 optional software, and 2 hardware patches successfully installed.
      3. The BIOS update successfully downloaded.

      BUT

      1. The Bios update is a no battery mode

      AND

While Civ III will run after a fanshion in SP2 without the Bios update it hangs on combat.

So my other PBEM game was sent on successfully, but Civ III hung when my bomber was auto-intercepted by a fighter.

Hopefully the Bios update is all I need.

      • Update:

After getting home last night and plugging in the notebook to electric power, the Bios upgraded just fine.

Opened up Civ III : Conquests, loaded the save.

Hey, it's back to working properly.

            • Hey Guys, some bad news.

That bios upgrade I installed so that I could play Conquests itself without crashing on combat introduced a new bug with wireless network. Specifically, it can't see any wireless networks, even at point blank range.

              • Update, web searching with google found that the Bios upgrade was leaving the wireless device itself OFF. Hum, that's one of the things windows was thinking, except that as a notebook there's no external on/off switch. Yeah, I didn't notice that the wireless light was off at the time, but replaying my memories shows that it was off.

The same message says to hold down a key combination during startup to turn on the wireless. I'll try that. In the mean time I've posted to that forum the timeline of events.
