  • Naval Battle PBEM NorthAmerica or similar times

So I was just thinking, "I love naval battles, a lot." Then I was thinking, "I bet they'd be more fun with humans instead of AI's."

So I thought, why not post a PBEM with the following:

    Islands
    Medium map
    80% water
    3-6 players
    C3C 1.22

    all other settings random

Other thing is I'd like this game to progress quickly, 2-3 turns a day at least in the beginning. Thus, please post availability.

    I'm GMT-6, and available:
    GMT 12pm-12:45pm (Central time 6am-6:45am)
    GMT (12am to 1am) - (5am to 6am) [Central Time 6 or 7 pm to 11pm or 12am)

That means please either be available VERY late at night european time or just evenings north american time, or if you can be on twice in between these times that works too (2 turns a day is fine by me).

I would also like to see if someone would like to set up the world and take a look at the map for us all, since starting up on Islands is very dangerous in terms of starting locations. Fortunately we have the Curragh so we can leave our islands early; I'd say startup location should be:
    * at least 5 usable squares for the starting city (not mountain or jungle or whatnot, and not all water) including the city square
    * at least 2 potential city locations that are reachable by Curragh (only 1 sea square max)

Any comments on the settings (like if there should be less water, or continents, or whatever) that would lead to a playable game but still lead to my preferred option of a primarily naval game would be invited.

Civ options are open as far as I'm concerned, I'll pick after everyone else has. Obviously seafaring civs have a bit of an advantage here. Perhaps someone will actually WANT to play the Koreans. =p

Edit: k, shows you how often I've even looked at koreans; I thought they were seafaring. (From someone with asian history knowledge in fairly copious amounts, you'd think I realized that the Koreans never really cared for water ...

Naval games are fun. I'd play if it were PtW. But not with Conquests.

If you have Conquests, you have PtW too, since it's included. But probably you wouldn't find more players, which is a pity, because PtW is the better game.

True, tho i didn't realize I could load just PTW - but I guess I never looked for the folder either

About it being the better game, that confuses me a little - I remember complaints when PTW came out that it was basically worthless. Is that just the true 'multiplayer' portion of it (and not the PBEM)?? Or is it just your opinion that the additions of Conquests are cruddy?

Online MP in PtW doesn't work. PBEM works.

Conquests looked promised, when it was released. Unfortunately, it is the last expansion of Civ3 and thus, was abandonned by the bulk of the developers. Only Jesse Smith is left, but for the vast amounts of bugs it has, he is hopelessly overstrained. He's still supporting us and may eventually fix the worst bugs, but this will take time.

PtW is a nice, balanced and enjoyable game, even though it has minor bugs left. A shame that its support has been abandonned too.

Hmm, interesting. Perhaps I should try playing a PTW game sometime ...

                  Hmmm... interesting observations SR.

At any rate - I am up for a ptw game if others are. And an islands game WITHOUT seafaring would be interesting. Limit it to 6 players.

                  I will take the Japanese.

Hmm, sounds like a plan, stan. Might also like to have a C3C naval game, but I'll officially let you hijack my thread for a PTW game. I've never PTWed before, but then again I just started conquest-PBEM like a week ago, so what the hey?

I get to pick a civ tho ... tho I'm going to suck at picking the civ I've no doubt since I don't know how PTW deals with UUs and whatnot.

So i'll be boring and go with Persians. Which UU do they have in PTW - the UU from Vanilla or from C3C? (Vanilla they have a cavalry variant I believe; C3C its something cruddier... like a swordsman or some such.)

Actually it's better that I start a new thread with PTW in the title, so I'm re-hijacking this thread for my c3c people. Go read the new thread for the PTW part.

Ok - sounds good. And btw - the Persian's UU is Immortals in all versions. It is teh 4-2-1 swordsman, much feared in the early ancient era - especially as the Persians can research iron working to start the game.

really? Could have sworn it was a cavalry variant in the first vanilla Civ 3. Perhaps I'm just confused (well, probably) ... but Persians used to be what I played all the time like 3 years ago or whenever civ3 first came out ...

not that I can remember what I was doing 3 days ago not to mention 3 years ago.

I would be very interested in a Naval game for c3c ver 1.22, I will also pas this onto Paddy the Scot who I know will most likely be interested.

Cool, I want at least 4 people I think for it. Perhaps more -- seems like it would be more fun with more, tho slower ...
