i have seen the odd green caravel lose to a trireme...but yes, for the most part , the obsolete boats scurry away crying as the new sail power comes through

Yes, they might try to poke the bear when it's a caravel, but then Frigates come along.

i dn't build frigates, but if leos upgrades them , then fine.....i usually wait until i have ironclads......

but frigates work well against crap naval units

I'll usually wait too, but sometimes you need one in trouble spots. And like showing that chariot early, it's never bad to let them know the possibilities.

its always good to lead with you your strong suit, and let them try to guess how many you actually have kinda like poker

and a single frigate can keep them off your shores for quite a while. Especially if you have the war academy or magellens. There ships will not be able to compete.

especially with magellans/waracademy...even LH makes for nasty ships......

its a great way to trade yourself to victory, a great investment which depending on your wonders could upgrade as time goes on

yeah, but smart players catch on and decide that using their raw materials to prevent your income from going through the roof is a good investment....

once i sink a few , i expect them to come at me oportunistically

Me too, but them I'm usually ready for them. And it ends up costing them even more wasted resources.

At what cost. There's usually someone else to trade with right around the corner. Or from you own islands so you don't even need anybody else.

yes and no, its profitable for him to prevent you trading without fear. Knocking out your boats at any cost IS cost effective for him if he prevents you from trading BIG DOLLARS.

but your right, he will waste more resources if his navy is outdated

Yep, I'm stuborn, I'll try to stop it too. But once your navy is inferior, it's tough.
