If I have Fission in time I’ll sure do that but the three AIs ahead of me are climbing the tech tree so fast I’m not sure that will be an option. I still have hope that I can trade some techs with Osman before he blows by me and then we’ll see. He’ll go for Communism no doubt and perhaps I’ll get a second round of trade with him if I go for Steam instead. By then the Inca should have caught up and I may be able to do some trading with them. I’m not sure what’s up with the Celts. They had some nasty alliances against them but I’m still surprised at how far behind they are. All the better for me though as they will probably catch up at some point and trade some techs one for one.

With my game, it is looking very bad for the Empire...

My only saving grace is the Royal Navy, although I had a small fleet decimated, 2 men of war, and 2 troop ships disapeared on the high seas. all very messy.

I know a few people having a go at SID level games. We can beat, we can, yes I am sure we can.....

            • I am not sure about how this will turn out, but I had a good start.

Std map, roaming barbs, 70% water, contients. I went with 7 civs.
I do not know if that is a boost for m or a boost for them.
I was thinking it may slow down the tech rate a tad.

It looks like I am on a large cont with only Korea. So I would think it is probably not a good thing as now Korea will grab most of the contient with no real rival at the start.
I was thinking 3 or 4 civs would be better, but I don;t know for sure.

              • I am way behind the Celts, I did not get a peek at Korea's tech as they attacked me. This stopped my new settler every 6 turns plan as I have no room west/nort or south/ I was going west, but ran into two large stacks when they declared. I have room on the
east for a couple of cities.

Two good things so far 1-GA trigger when they attacked.
Yeah is is despot, but it will allow me to stay alive here.
2- MGL. I now have a mix army in Lazapa where they have been pounding away with scores of units. So far my loses are small as I am on a hill and have a cat. Now I have the army so I feel it should be fine unless they send all at once, not likely.

                • I have a stack of at least 10 enslaved workers in the city, but can't get them out right now.

I have killed several setter teams, but the AI can afford them.

I have two small stacks with a cat in one and 3 in another to go for a city of theirs. The problem will be to get some good attack units before they can bring swords or horses to bear.

I just learned the wheel and see two horses, but have to hook them up. If I have Iron, it will be hard to afford the upgrades.

I am going with 4 camps and the capitol as a settler pump. It won't be need to do that any longer so I am hoping to get the shields increased there.

Anyway it will be fun to see how much they will toss at me in the next 5-10 turns.

The wonder complete msgs have seen Inca with 4 so far. Celts, Korea and Arabs with one each. You know how scary it is to get these msgs of wonders that you do not even have the tech for yet.

Don't know where the Inca land is, but I hope is far away. I have seen some of the Celts with 4 coastal cities so far, that I can see.

Javs forted in a hill city make attacking expensive for warriors and spears and even archers. Here is the point in the game that I feel less sure about what is the best way to proceed. I am thinking I need to muster up some means to take at least 4 cities and get some tech from peace. Once they get pikes, it will be a nightmare to attack cities. I have been making lots of cats to bring along for the assualts.

At least they won't be getting any help form anyone else for now.

                  • Keep us posted Vmxa1. I’m interested in how your early wars are going to go. I suspect that you’ve chosen a really difficult map but if you can fight off Korea then it may work out. If you find that an early war isn’t profitable then it’s possible that a Pangaea start could work with 80% water so that you would have a chance to control the bottlenecks and get a decent Rex but still be able to invade without ships later in the game. In general, I’ve found that if you can get a Curragh or two out early they can be really effective in locating rivals and trading techs even if you’re not Seafaring although it may be too late for that at the stage of the game you’re in. Good luck and happy belated birthday

                    • I only got a few turns in before company came and we went out to the poker club. I had the celt do the auto leave and decided to go to war with them to try to see more map.
I don't think they will come soon and hey I am in despot so what do I care.
I want those contacts, if I can get them. IW in next turn. Horses hooked up. SoZ done this turn, so maybe I can take it to them a bit soon.

                        • I should be getting back to after this. I wanted to mention some behavior that I took advantage of in the game.

I finally spotted about 5 ivory tiles and headed for it. I got a city down and had a settler with two escorts to block off the rest of the ivory. I ran into a few 2 units stacks and a 6 unit stack. They had several settler spears combos about.

I got spooked when they declared war and sent the settler in the other direction. I figured I would just lose the new city anyway and wanted to use the escorts to hold the one ivory I had gotten.

Well the AI turn all its units around and head for Lazwhatever, except two that head for my town. So far they have not come back for the ivory or my town. They already had two other cities near by and should have beaten me to the ivory, especialy since they know it was there all along.

I don't know why they want to take Laz, maybe it has coal in its area. It can't be iron as there must be lots of that around. (I will know on the next turn about Iron)

They of course split the stack of 6 and hit Laz piece meal, letting me survive and get in help. The real reason Laz is alive is I use two small stack to go after two size 1 towns and they headed a bunch of units away from Laz to defend them.
I have not actually attack those towns as my units are under constant attacks. One is one ahill and the other has two cats.
The reinforcing of Laz was lame as well. They had a lot units parked all around and I sent a cat and 2 units (JT and spear) up between them and they never hit them.

I doubt their towns really needed defending and they would have been better of taken Laz and losing one of theirs. They could rebuild and defend better than I can. Of course thy still send in the settler combo to my land during the war. I have a lot of slaves now.

So the switch and draw away units sucker play works fine. The lack of concentrated attack, those are my best allies right now. That and massive defensive bonus. At least I am having fun, even if I do go down fo the count.

The big worry is other civs showing up with massive frigates to bombard and dropping units off that are superior. But that is later.

                            • Been at war a long time. Korea has sent 30-35 units into my lands or near by. They are mostly in small groups. I killl some and they send in the same amount I kill.
Biggest stack had 14 units, but I was able to pound them with 6-10 cats and hit them as they come in contact, as the pull along side and then as they go past.
So when get past me I am able to finish them off. They have keep me tied up for a long time, but I am starting to push them back a bit.

I have mad 7 MGL (lost one), so I have 4 armies with the Pentagon.

Met India and then lost all my curraghs. Korea snk some and Celts got the rest. I finally got a galley out and it is down to 1 hp.
I only need to met one more civ.

Inca landed and founded a city by a razed site. I hit them with an army and captured the city eventually.

So I am at war with Inca, Celts and Korea.

I did make peace with Korea in 290BC for Myst and Map. I then attacked them on the next turn.

I still figure I want to stay at war with them until one of us is gone. I need lots of cities to try to get in the research race at some point.

F3 now says I am avg vs Korea and the numbers have gone way done. I have taken 6 or 7 cities. Mainly I was able to funnel them into a kill zone for my cats. Now I can afford to go on the attack with my 4 man armies. Lots of jungle so the cats can't move through much of the tiles.

Still no pikes, but I figure it won't be long. I live in dread that a large stackwill show up with knights and pikes and put me out.

I have 63 troops and 12 cats still left and 3 camps making horses and the SoZ making AC.
