A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

      The ultimate Civ2MP match?..........

Imagine what would happen if we put all the great Civ2MP players in one single Freeciv longturn match (with civ2 rules settings of course). Who would be the last one standing?

Longturn...one month and several centuries later...

One month and several in-game centuries later the longturn game is still on. As a matter of fact, all the players are still active.

The best part in playing longturn instead of regular MP is that the chess-like aspects of Civ take over. You've got plenty of time to think things through. Thanks to an excellent go-to function you'll be able to plan your combat moves like clockwork when the time expires. Unit goto's are executed automatically the moment the next turn starts, you don't have to be online for it to happen.

And now some recent headlines from my part of the world:

"English surprise strike at capital decapitates Inca leadership"

"War continues after English warriors take a number of undefended Inca cities"

"Strong resistance after initial wave, English planners amazed by sheer size of Inca empire."

"Are the Inca's capable of organizing a counterattack?
          - It appears the English surprise attack didn't start a moment too soon. In time they would have buried us with their numbers (anoymous quote)-"

"English warriors prepare defenses for Inca counter attack"

"Heavy fighting at .... xxxx (name witheld for security reasons "

In short the fun has just started

              Hey Hydey,

We are planning a Freeciv Civ2 longturn game. It will start once we have about 15 players listed. Currently Deity, Winzity, Germanos, Gislan and me are already onboard. Why don't you and AH sign up as well?

                SDL development continues

In the background development of the Freeciv client continues. Some work has been done in trying to compile the SDL-Win32 Freeciv client. There's some good news to report after a functional SDL client has finally been able to run under windows. This is a another small but significant step.

                It works.

More news on the development of the SDL client.

                  Hi all

Ok... here are some info about my work on SDL Client (many people ask
                  about it)

Client is playable ( almost ) even in muliplayer. Should be build
without any errors ( ok.. current debug=yes will break becouse I don't
commit some remove log.h patch from some files but debug=some and
                  debug=no will go )

Still some dlgs are missed but we can play without it ( or not ).

                  Bugs:
                  - Log window is draw above nations dlg becouse I made there ugly hack
and don't have time to correct it ( rewrite nations dlg )
                  - There is some bug in move window with scrollbar code but fixing it
wont be easy and require some changes in widget system.
                  - Next problem is log window, I try found this @#$%^$^ bug for many
                  weaks and still something missing
                  - more

Some new future (for those people that don't know)
                  - some client comand line options ( ok... 2 comnads: start fullscreen
800x600 and events in other thread for linux/beos )
                  - scallable minimap.
                  - use of mmx1 instruction (where avilable and only when build from
source) - I have some mmx1 code for SDL lib, if someone want it then
                  just say

                  Dlgs that work :
                  - Connect Dlg.
                  - Option Dlg.
                  - City Dlg.
                  - Worklist Dlg.

                  - Economy Rep.
                  - Science Rep.
                  - Top 5 Cities.
                  - Wonders of Word.
                  - News.
                  - Demography
                  - Find City.
                  - Units Dlgs (caravans, settlers, spys/diplomats, etc )
                  - more ( those that I forgot here and don't write in TODO part )

As I know there is no problem with win32 port of this client. Per have
                  better info about it.

                  BIG TODO :
                  - CMA Dlg. ( initial work )
                  - Goto City Dlg.
                  - Airlift City Dlg.
                  - Help Dlg. (need new graphics)

                  - Nuke Explosion. (need new graphics)
                  - Correct, clean and finish deluxe tilesets (need new graphics)

with some new code in cvs:
                  - add support for units gold unkeep. (city dlg. units dlg)
                  - add support for borders in minimap . (minimap)
                  - update_conn_list_dialog - mabe after Client/server auth. pach I make
some batte.net like dialog (witch chat , players list and setup server,
start game, join server/chnge chanel and disconnect buttons ) where
pubservers will work as chat chanels. Problem : server settings API.

                  widget sytem:
                  - fix move window with scrollbar ( scrollbar->min and scrollbar->max
                  aren't change by move_window code )
                  - add better key support (menu kebard control and more - this wont be
easy but I made some first steps for it)

                  Small TODO :

                  - add reserched techs status dlg.

                  - put_city_workers - ???
                  - put_cross_overlay_tile - ???

                  Long term TODO :
                  - add sound support to widgets system (buttons pressed , open window,
                  etc ).
                  - add chat subwindow/subsystem.
                  - rewrite "Top 5 Cities" and "Wonders of Word" net protocol - server

                  - add default worklist widget to new city name dlg.
                  - start new game from strat menu, run server as :
                  * other thread ?
                  * other proces
                  * telnet/ssh to other PC and run server
                  - load game from start menu. (see run server as)
                  - add load/save via client options.

Well, for the last few days I've had it up and running. Bugs still pop up but once you know how to solve them they're no longer showstoppers. I'll try to play a complete game this weekend and see how it goes.

Here are three things you'll have watch out for if you want to try the SDL client:

                      1) A wrong parameter was included in the Freeciv server shortcut. Just select the properties for the scortcut and remove all the parameters behind civserver.exe. Once the Civserver is running you can tweak the settings as usual (just start with set aifill 8 for a regular game with 8 civs). type 'HELP' if you want more information about the various options.

                      2) The SDL client crashes when you join a game in 640x480 windowed mode. 640x480 fullscreenmode works however. or just select a higher resolution for far better results.

3)Sometimes an onscreen menu blanks out and you'll only see a dark rectangle with the outlines. Push the left and right mouse button at the same time to get the menu back.

                              Civ2 Longturn -final call-

If you ever wanted to play in massive Civ MP game, this it!

To anyone wanting to try out a longturn with civ2 settings (deity difficulty) this is the final chance to enlist! We've reached the 15 person minimum and the game will start in a week or so. If want to join do it now. We're playing at Deity difficulty level plus some extra tweaks to limit ICS and lower the power of diplomats (they're only 50% effective).
