Dear fellow Civ players
As you may know there are quite a few civ related games around in the world. Some of them are commercial and some of them are free (libre). In the free corner we can find civ games like Civ-evo, Clash of Civilizations and of course...Freeciv.
If a casual player raised on various commerical Civ releases he wouldnot be impressed. The graphics and sound (now finally ready to be implemented) are so basic it would scare away a newbie/ ordinary player if even he managed to start it up. However if you're a veteran of Civ who knows rules inside out, a quick glance would not do this game justice. I know, because I've been properly twiddling with it for a year by now.
A game like Freeciv always seems to be a step behind it's commercial counterparts. But that doesn't mean it lags behind, it DOES get better. Freeciv is quite good at some points and it could get better with a well tested windows version. Problem is, there don't seem to be enough Beta testers and programmers for the windows version.
So that's why I decided to do a call on the regulars here. Nearly everyone knows the game by heart and is computer savy enough to try something different while we wait for Civ3MP (maybe christmas?
).
Anyone interested in helping out?
If you want to try out the Beta, go to this link
ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/freeciv/incoming/
Just download the file titled "freeciv-win-cvs.zip" and unzip it in a directory. With this version you can finally start the game from the client instead of setting up the game in the server first. It is a Beta however, so if you find anything strange (crash/odd move?) please report it in this thread. If we find those bugs the Freeciv developers can root them out for us.
P.S
I've already discovered a bug : the windows client startup menu doesn't seem to work properly under Win98. The game starts up but it's closed off at once.
A workaround for this is the normal startup method:
click on the server (server interface appears)
type set aitfill 8 (this will give you 8 players, but you can increase this to 30)
now start the client, fill in your name and join a game (your name should pop up in the server screen)
type start and the game will start
Note: there are countless more options in the server screen just type help to learn about the various commands (saving, loading games, difficulty, netplay etc..) and options (land mass, history log ( a real one yeah!)
etc..)
