Since the formula is based on the mapsize a big map only gives you more potential maximum distance match-ups. At this point in the above game my beaker cost was 10k+. But yes, it is hard to get beaker costs of 5k in a scenario.

Are we allowed to restart if we screw up a turn?
Anyway I'm playing a game with the neutrals and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to smash the neutral record without restarting.
Anyway the basics of the strategy is that you build two tanks in Tehran and one in Stockholm. Those go for Baghdad and Bergen respectively. You also build a sacrificial city or two near istanbul and build diplomats. when you get the city to revolt back to you you should have a great platform for smashing your enemies and you pretty much solve the issue of risking loosing Belgrade.
I have lots of saved games with all the minors but most had a a number of restarts in them.

I'm probably one of the few who could discuss neutral strategies.
Do you have the MGE engine or no? I find this is the only scenario that significantly changes the outcome. I've not successfully beaten the game with the neutrals under the MGE AI.
What's your strat for trading at the outset? I usually pick up 7 techs on the first turn by trading with the french, turks and the spanish.
Anyways, interesting idea to allow the germans to take belgrade, and then bribe the city back.
Do you do the van trick to earn several thousand dollars by shipping goods from tehran to stockholm?Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

registered on here and noticed how fast you guys are completing this scenario!
With the Spanish, I can't build an army till at least 1970s due to the techs!
Am I correct in building city walls first and stablising the econamy and discovering democracy as soon as possible
suggestions?

Neutrals
Ash,
My strategy is 'hard out agression' and demanding of tribute.
So I don't build many city walls because I dont plan on spending any time on the defensive. Even when I am cutting my way into Russia and I expect sneak attacks it is more a matter of having acceptable losses than city walls.
Although the more defensive strategies can be fun - they just don't win as quickly... and the enemy can get onto the front foot
In terms of democracy - I get that from the allies by demanding tribute - but strategically that takes away too many of my negotiating options at the beginning of the game so I try not to get it too early - if I do I suppose I need to turn it down.
Ben,
When I started playing I had the normal version of Civ II but my current one that I have registered my fastest times on is MGE. The big problem with MGE is if you dont get on the front foot fast the AI is much harder to deal with.
In the first round of negotiations on tech I get, i think, mass production from the french - that gets you an extra tech to trade with everyone else so you can get everything from the turks and spanish. But then I also try to fit in a threat against the french because the most important part of my game is that I need to be strategically at war with certain countries at the right times.
the most important part of my strategy is that I want to send tanks across to the mediteranian - so i need to have a war with the allies and take bagdad and one with hte french and take the two french cities or they will just insist I withdraw which sets me back a couple of turns.
I have found it hard to get that sort of return off doing the trade strategy - I guess I dont have the time to set it up properly and I cant go to democracy early in the game because it compromises my ability to manage exactly who I am at war with.

Spain
For the spanish one of my favourite strategies is to cross over to Rome and suffocate it from resources (so it will have at best 1 or 2 defense units - maybe even just a transport). I then relocate a lot of armies (including a few with good attack strength and a settler for landing) to be transported over to italy and have a quick war with the axis where I sweep through Italy.
This sets me up for a fairly rough relationship with the axis but it makes for a fast start. I usually have to stop at italy because the two cities beyond the alps require too many resources to take but then I can move back to attacking the french for a while.
I can also use the sacrificial city strategy in italy although it is a bit hit and miss.
The other alternative is for me to just go after the french.
My strategy relies on me having a good reputation so that I dont get sneak attacked by superpowers. So I dont sneak attack the axis or the french I jsut ask for tribute etc until they fight me.

Multiplayer
If anyone is still around who is interested I'd like to do a multi-player with one or two others as minor powers against the computer and see how it goes as per further up the thread.
I think in some ways it will be different from playing normally as Ozzykp and Moker seem to have found in the other thread with Spain and France, so it might be harder in some ways - but with another player it should still be doable.
