"Peace cannot be kept by force.
It can only be achieved by understanding"
yep that's my main resource right now. Its the most complete of all the ME compediums and encyclopedias out there although wiki is not too bad as well.
I'm more or less done with the map. You may notice I've sliced it into three segments using ocean. What I'm doing right now is Downloading everything from Wolf's bane to Daro to Ultima to comb through for units and sound. Will have more to update later.
Helm's Deep will be slowly building a wonder (Leonardo's Workshop) for which Men of the West is not given the prereqisite. When it is built, lots of useless villagers will be upgraded into Rohan Lancers. This will force the player to hold Helm's Deep.
Each blackrider killed will spawn a fellbeast Nazgul, which when kiled will spawn a clone of itself. When the ring is destroyed, the spawing spot will become part of the Sea of Nurnen.
If Frodo is killed, Sauron will be reborn.
There will be no population growth, small cities will look like ruins while the largest city will have the Minas Tirith look. Same concept with Mordor, Isengard and Elves.
Invincible tree (not ent) units will be guarding the river crossing at Caras Galadhon so the actual city can be set back from the river. There will be a channel between the trees to allow allies to pass but ZOC will prevent the badies from going the other way.
Started working on more units, I think I got most of the Gondor and Rohan units now.
...basically widening Erwan style units and then splicing together different parts of them and finally adding a shield.
I've been thinking some more. Going to use pools of water and then put ships that look like mountains on them (the idea being they create no ZOC which was really iritating in some scenarios when dragging units by mouse past Mt ranges.) Should be able to block off the back of fortresses and such.
Hobbits are goin to be weak helicopter-fighter units. I'm not going to have hero hobbits so if one of them dies doing their task, you have the option of assigning another one from Hobbiton)
I played Harlan Thompson's Lord of the Rings about 10 months ago and got a big kick out of it except for one thing . . . . . destroying the ring was not a climactic event that ended the scen. There was still much mopping up of various enemies, very much an anti-climax after the epic first half of the scen.
Please see if you can come up with a more spectacular ending that would be much more satisfying to players.
Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :
Money can buy happiness, just raise the luxury rate to 50%.
Money is not the root of all evil, it is the root of great empires.
I've finished most of the units now and replaced the unit set two posts above. Made or modified the top four rows and I'm using existing units for he rest.
As for the climatic finish....
I'm not sticking strictly to the story line. If you destroy the ring, Barad dur will be destroyed plus some of the powerful Mordor units will get obsolete. There'll be some kinda message to say you can stop now but the option to play on is there, there won't be a destroy civilization event. Most likely, there will just be a set number of objective cities you must control, you won't need to wipe out all the baddies. As I recall, there were mopping up operations like Galadriel and Celeborn had to go destroy Dol Guldur, Saruman had to be kicked out of the Shire etc.
Now if Frodo is killed by Shelob etc, Sauron will be re-born (see the fiery unit above) but he will be killable if you attack with ten veteran units followed by a couple of heores (any army of the dead left over would be really useful then).
...on to an unrelated matter, I wasted a day trying to test out the ZOC effect of units and cities in odd/even tiles. Figured it might be a good way to constrain the AI forces but turns out their ZOC effect is haphazard. Back to the drawing board.
I think its to do with the dither tile in terrain two but I didn't touch that and some how the vertical (and occasional horizontal) while lines just won't go away. Does anyone have experience with this problem.
