      • Assyria:

Victory in the first barbarian excursion!

Euphoria spread through the streets of Calah as the news from the eastern front reached the people.

"VICTORY! Our glorious troops have driven the barbarians back!"

Soon the first troops arrived back in the city, many of them wounded very badly.

Those who could talk and got away with only minor injuries enthusiastically told the story of their encounter with the barbarian hordes to the children who had assembled in the city square to cheer on their heroes.

"..and with a great roar, our chariot force rushed into their lines of defense. Although their weapons were more advanced, made of harder and deadlier material than anything we use, we could overwhelm them because their morale faltered as our chariots crushed them like an avalanche. We held true because we knew that a victory for the Greater Good would outweigh all our losses, and so we chased them down to the river, where what little was left of their force drowned pitifully. We also took heavy losses, for example our squad leader..."

Emperor Sargon congratulated the ASDF on a job well done but warned them not to become too elated, for a moment of laxity spawns a lifetime of heresy.

In the south, a veteran skirmisher platoon was approaching a village to spread the gospel of the Greater Good, but came across a party of raiders which had freshly disembarked from a nearby boat.

Having received the message of their ASDF brothers' victory to the east, they were unable to hold back and crashed into the unorganized lines of the barbarians with a loud roar, screaming "For the Emperor!" at the top of their lungs. It took them all but half an hour to do away with the raiders. The assimilation of the village has been delayed to a later time.

In the west, a squadron of horsemen came across a village which they promptly claimed and conquered in the name of the Emperor and the Greater Good.

        Egypt:

The empire enslaves yet another village.

        • Emperor Sargon: What of this barbarian horde, that dares to atttack Assyria ? Does it consist of scores of Bronze Infantry and Battering Rams, as described by our ancestors ? Or just a few bands of Swordsmen as foretold by our prophets ?

          Comment

          • So far we have routed only a single regiment of infantry equipped with crude bronze swords (bronze infantry I) and sighted no other barbarians in the immediate area around the battlefield, but the ASDF is still on alert and has started occupying the mountain ranges whence the barbarians came from to catch any further excursions before they come this dangerously close again.

Sadly, our intelligence on those parts of the world is at best sketchy and incomplete, as the rough terrain allows for only very painfully slow reconaissance.

                • In the playtest, we saw Bronze Infantry units only in large hordes. But the pattern could be different in this game.

Hittites: Hut = 100g. Hittites across the land rioted when Mursilis built a new town on ground considered sacred to Ishtar.

Babs: Lost a brave band of skirmishers attacking a barb town. Our early chariot unit defeated the heathens.

                  • Assyria:

                    The barbarian threat reemerges!

The celebrations in Arbela came to a grinding halt as recon units of the ASDF reported that the barbarians had reemerged to the east of the city.

However, the brave ASDF troops have already fortified their position in the river valley on the mountains east of Arbela, creating a nigh impenetrable stronghold against all barbarian attacks.

The fate of the Assyrian nation depends on whether or not the ASDF's lines will hold.

The new, standardized banner of the ASDF.

Also, we do not wish to offend king Mursilis of the Hittites, however, we must kindly ask you not to move any further eastward with your skirmisher platoon. Not only would it penetrate the Assyrian border and violate our territorial integrity, but it would also create a most annoying ZOC for a group of settlers passing through the river valley.

To the west, a veteran chariot has brought the gift of the Greater Good to yet another village.

                    Egypt:

A group of raiders which came ashore has been beaten back, however, another boat with cargo has been sighted off the nile delta.

A hut yields the writing technology.

We are not even slightly offended, gracious King in the East. Perhaps this would be a good time to discuss borders [or at least a scouting agreement]. Hittite scouts have also spotted Assyrian horsemen near Hittite cities, and we would prefer to avoid conflicts in both locations. Hattas once offered to discuss this, and/or cooperation in science. If you are ready, let's talk.

[The Babylonians made a similar offer, which is also still open].

                          • Best wishes to the Cretan defenders.

Sargon has twice declined to discuss scouting and trade with Hattas. King Mursilus wonders about the manners and intentions of the king in the South, yet hopes for a benign explanation. Our scouts will respect Sargon's 3310BC request, but in return, we ask that the wounded Assyrian horsemen on the coast proceed no closer to Hattusas.

                            Hittites: Hut = advanced tribe

                            • Assyria:

Sargon is rather puzzled. So, to clear things up:

We do not believe that the Hittites have any technology that would be of interest for our nation right now. We will gladly accept mutually beneficial technology trade in the future.

As for the horsemen, once the wounded have been treated (next turn), they will leave the area. However, we should talk about Assyrian claims to mediterranean ports, which will be vital if Assyria is to make contact with the distant kingdoms of Minos and Greece.

And concerning the perimeter around our empire: We do not know how Assyria could be bound territorially yet, but for now, Assyria's borders are as follows:

To the south, a diagonal line going from the southwest to the northeast through 121, 67. To the north, a diagonal line going from the southwest to the northeast through 94, 40. To the east, the mountain ranges, and to the west the desert.

While Assyria will expand, this is the core region which we would not like to see foreign scouts in.

So, as we have respected Babylonian, Persian, Egyptian and Hittite territorial integrity, we expect others to respect our inner borders as well.

In other news, a village was once again brought under control of the greater good. Downstream, a barbarian excursion was pushed back. The barbarians to the east have, mysteriously enough, vanished.

                              Egypt:

                              Hut, early chariot.
