  • I've always wanted to jump in; I'm gearing up for it.
    I need to make sure I have the right stuff installed: original rules.txt, latest patch, etc.

              • Managed 8 turns (part way thru turn 8 actually). Here's the save - write up to follow tomorrow.

                In a nut shell - Fusion Power ready to be discovered next turn with no more deliveries. All that is needed now is to build the ship!

                Ran out of time - I can finish off if nobody else wants to.

                  I picked this up with the intention of finishing the bird, and then realised that I couldn't remember the optimum configuration in the 16th century - sorry guys

                  Is it 15-2-2-1-1-1?

                  Anyway I've completed Sharkbait's turn and brought back some vans.

                    Not sure I recall what if anything the 16th century has to do with spaceship construction...what am I forgetting?? However...

                    • It does help - thanks, Monk. I was thinking of the situation where it's worth building with 2 components because it would take another turn to build the third.

                      Anyway, the rules now prevent me finishing this until others have had the opportunity to step in. There's plenty of vans to finish the SS and plenty of money available.

                      After launch you can rush howies and conquer large parts of the world if you want to.

                      • OK guys, I owe you all a lot of apologies and I need to spend a lot of time in the institute. Having realised that I couldn't get a van into Gordium, I completely forgot to buy a space ship part, so it will now take us an extra turn to finish the ship.

                          +1380 (0) – set TSL to 100% science to try and get 2 tech per turn. Gift all techs to Mongols (purple). Now 1360 beakers per turn needed and we’re making 1379. RB vans in every city.

                          +1400 (1) – Magellan done.
                          Miniaturization -> Computers -> Flight (2 techs)
                          Silk to Karakorum (D) +980g, dye to Cardiff (d) +980g.
                          RB all vans from scratch (about 3000g).
                          Gift 2 new techs to Mongols. SETI RB in Arbela (using food and oil vans). 4078g left.
                          Mongs nearly done on Eiffel. Refuse 100g from French for war on Celts.

                          +1420 (2) – Flight (cancels Colossus) -> Radio -> Advanced Flight.
                          SETI built in Arbela. RB airport in SSC (couldn’t remember if this was of any value or not – I know that if 2 cities have airports then their delivery bonus is increased, but not sure the effect of just one. Answers on the back of a postcard please )
                          Silk to Karakorum (d) +1008g, Beads to Caerphilly (D) +460g and (N) +230g. Tech done.
                          Gift Radio and Flight to Mongs. RB vans. 2451g left.
                          Kells builds Eiffel. Mongs change to Hoover. I gift Computers to Aztecs out of kindness.

                          +1440 (3) – Advanced Flight -> Robotics (probably a blunder here – I think I could have traded for Fundy from someone and avoided this in hindsight).
                          Don’t get second tech – sooo close!
                          Dye to Caernarfon (D) +500g.
                          RB vans, 73g left. Gift Advance d Flight to Mongs.

                          +1460 (4) – Robotics -> Rocketry -> Space Flight.
                          Silk to Karakorum (D) +1050g. Beads to Thermopylae (D) +496g and (N) +248g. Cloth to Carmarthen (D) +815g. Tech was already done but wanted the cash for rush buying.
                          Gift Mongs 2 techs. RB vans down to 89g.

                          +1480 (5) – Space Flight -> Plastics.
                          Dye to Paris (N) +290g. Tech done.
                          I try and decide whether to go to 100% tax now and just use freight deliveries for the last few techs, or whether to try and grow the SSC a bit. In the end I go to 70/0/30 to get the celebrations going and also get some cash in.
                          Silk to Athens (D) +732g (this was actually a slip of the mouse, but no big deal!).
                          Prepare Apollo using vans. RB some more vans.
                          French abandon Women’s Suffrage, Aztecs change to SoL, and I turn down Aztec offer of alliance for war on Celts.

                          +1500 (6) – Plastics -> Espionage (no direct tech).
                          Apollo built. (Maybe I should have started building some spaceship parts here, but I didn’t so there!).
                          Silk to Karakorum (D) +1078g, Dye to Tenochitlan (D) +756g. Tech done.
                          RB vans down to 26g. Mongs nearly done Hoover, Aztecs nearly down SoL.

                          +1510 (7) – Espionage – Superconductor.
                          Visit Mongs, gift all 3 techs. Beakers needed go from 1638 to 1560 for next tech.
                          Einstein employed in Sidon (to trigger techs). Now making 1599 beakers per turn after TSL to 0/100/0 to try and get Superconductor and Fusion in same turn.
                          Dye to Teotihuacan (D) +808g, Silk to Tenochitlan (D) +1040g. Tech done. RB vans to 242g.
                          Kells builds Hoover, Mongs change to Manhattan Project!! Tlatelolco builds SoL.

                          +1520 (8) – Superconductor -> Fusion Power. Darn – only 1 tech! .
                          Dye to Caernarfon (D) +504g. Tech done. TSL to 100/0/0.

                          And that’s where I left it. Maybe we could have shaved a couple of turns off if we had made a few squares of farmland around the SSC earlier to keep it growing a bit more (and get a few more turns of 2 techs per turn), and I probably should have traded for Fundy to avoid having to take Espionage and/or Robotics. But maybe this would have then opened up another turn with no direct tech to choose from – not sure. And also I possibly should have delivered some more vans and started spaceship parts as soon as Apollo was built?

                            OK - I've played another turn and launched the ship. It will land in 1561.

                            I reagard the remaining turns as rather boring. We can expect the AI to sneak attack us, so if anyone wants to take over and conquer a slice of the world without taking a reputation hit, shout now. I'll wait 24 hours before going any further.

                            Otherwise, I'll simply hit the enter button a few times until we've won.

                            • Our journey to the stars is over!

                              We duly landed in 1561. The AI was rather less frisky than I expected. The Zulus made a silly attack and were wiped out for their troubles. The Greeks made a pointless attack on the last turn (after the attached save). Otherwise it was very quiet.

                                This was the first Early Landing Game that I've followed closely. The guide (which I've read some time ago) is slightly overwhelming, so this was exciting to watch.

                                Again, many thanks to all players for taking the time and care in creating this thread.
