  • I think for the most part the units look great. There are a couple which I preferred in your original posting - the engineer and the spy in particular. I really don't like that big floppy bulldozer.

Also I think the (explorer??) unit is really difficult to read, can you simplify it at all?

But mainly, I like them. That legion is *glorious!* However I think a real problem is the terrain, which may or may not be your concern. The most glorious unit will look awful on the wrong terrain. Forgive me but the terrain is just hard to look at, because the colors are too primary, too unvaried, and because of an effort to include too much detail. The ocean looks like carpeting, the forest looks like broccoli, the buffalos look like they're floating in midair.

Hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings, I'm just being honest.

    • the terrain reminds me of an snes game, i don't know why
I am not delusional! Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go dance with the purple wombat who's playing show-tunes in my coffee cup!

        Will take that onboard.
        Couple of questions:

        1) Is the bulldozer too big or should it be something else?

        2) You mean with "read" you don't recognize the explorer (Tux with a donkey) as an explorer?

        Valmont,

Thanks for the compliment and, more importantly, the constructive comments. It's that kind of feedback I need most.

The opinion that the set (apart from a few niggles) seems OK is actually the most important. I'm trying to create a visually pleasing and consistent set where the A) recognition and B) use of a unit should be C) discernable by its appearance for both D) newbies and E) experienced players.

I'm aware of the terrain. I'll probably replace that later with some of terrain in the r-hires set (already GPL). The terrain will need to be touched up anyway but that will have to wait until the units are finished.

        P.S
You can thank Fairline for the legion, I just retouched his armour and gave him a new helmet.

i'd like to see a full sized t-35 or a js-2 with a full sized turret
and infantry in proportion with the tanks
If humans appeared in proportion to most of the vehicles I would have an easy time. At 64x48 most of them wouldn't be more then 9-12 pixels coloured matchsticks next to the vehicle or a torso/head sticking out. It could work at 128x96 or higher though.

          • 5x2 pixel old-school infanry, yay
i suppose if you grouped a hoad of 'em together
it might loom like a tiny battalion of infanrty(or a tiny battalion of matches)

            • Ok, my first attempt at upgrading the terrain graphics. The mountains are pretty good. Forests are so so. The hills look dire!

                • The problem with Tux as an explorer is that it introduces a fantasy element into an otherwise realistic graphics set. Tux is fine as a logo, but moving an actual penguin around breaks the suspension of disbelief.

I recommend keeping the old hills and the old engineer. Change for change's sake is not really necessary at this point.

Hmmm...Catfish and Favoured Flight have done a lot of original work, including terrain graphics.

Well, the penguin was supposed to be a spot of comic relief and to set it apart from the other civilization games out there ("hey look! The explorer is a penguin! " ).

I've also made a human version of the explorer so replacing that one is easy. Besides, I can always add in a row and leave it as an extra.

For the hills I will take a look at Catfish's work. His ToT terrain is excellent.

The old engineer will have to be redone however. It's not in the same style as the other units. It will look a bit more 'cartoonish' instead of photorealistic.

                        • Taking on the units AND the terrain is a bit too much right now. I'll be concentrating on finishing the units first. Here's a new version of the engineer:

                            Looks quite good.

To me it looks like the perspective on the wheels are a bit off compared to the rest of the vehicle.

I do think I prefer the other one actually, although it's a bit to big.
We are the apt, you will be packaged.

                            • Thanks, the wheels seems a bit odd but that can be tweaked. Resizing the bulldozer is far easier. Here's the small bulldozer for comparison.

Heh, seems we did the same thing. I also just tweaked the bulldozer
