  • I sold my soul...

Well I finished the OCC with Spaceship victory in 1885. I had to sell my soul and all my allies to the Mongols to make it. I guess I did not get off on the right foot with them at first meeting. I turned down a tech exchange because I was trying to get Monarchy ASAP, but in the long run getting chummy with the nearest neighbors may have been worth the delay. As it was I had to sell out all the allies I made but one along the way, and still didn't get the alliance till 1750. Once that "critical path" RR route went in, though, life was sweet. I built a fort on the mountain at the entrance to that little neck to guard the RR route, and extended a defense line through the jungle to the sea. Here's the end:

    • Very nice, Elle. Your Mongrels sure were aggressive in your game. Did they "eat" a lot of your camels?? And you are right about the advantages of a station city. For one thing, I only had to connect two tiles, so it was much faster, kicked in earlier and did not have the problem of keeping other units off the tracks/road. What was the route values before you "expired" the Colossus??

      Good game

      • Thanks, Monk. My first 3 TR deliveries went to Kashgar, which was near the Whale southeast of the neck. I delivered by ship to avoid land complications. I kept the Trireme around to get units past the Mongol empire so I could look for other civs and huts. Once my first Horse got past the Mongols it did pretty well.

The Spanish got Flight in 1796 from Darwins. I had gifted them a bunch of tech in anticipation, forgetting to keep back one of the prereqs. I have a save from 1786 where I had not finished the RR to Kashgar yet, but the routes were already +28 each from the RD and SH. Without Colossus they dropped to +22, then the RR brought them up to +27. After that I improved some land around Kashgar and they went up to +30. Athens was size 32 throughout; Kashgar went from size 9 to size 17. I don't think they had a SH there, though I gifted them Auto as soon as I got it. Refrig seems to have been a better gift.

        • Solo, in your log on page 3 of this thread, you show that you bribed half a dozen AI units over a relatively short period. At the end of it, you say

"My horsemen around Karakorum were living off these bribes, waiting to become knights."

Since unit bribe prices are usually several times more than the cost you would pay to rushbuy the unit, I'm curious about your rationale for the bribes. And I have no idea what the quote above means. Can you enlighten this poor admirer? Thanks.

          • Without any bribes my horsemen would have been attacked and eliminated before they could become knights.
