That's correct. The song is about Australian conscripts being sent to the Vietnam War. It has no connection whatsoever with WW1.

The reference to 'the band playing Walzing Matilda' as the conscripts board thier ship is meant to symbolise jingoism and nationalism (IMO )

Yes, at least during Kaiserlacht. It seemed that the General staff believed that infantry armed with the right weapons can face anything and as such never trusted the machines.

        @Curt

A gameplay question: If tanks are to be used as a one shot weapon to create a ridge in enemy defences, how will Gas be used if not in the same way?

Listen to the text and you'll soon understand they sing about ww1.

"...Then in 1915, me country said son: It's time to stop rambling, there's work to be done. So they give me a tin hat and they gave me a gun, and they sent me away to the war..."

          "...we sailed off for Gallipoli..."

"...How well I remember that terrible day, when our blood stained the sand and the water. And how in that hell they call Sula Bay, we were butchered like lambes at the slaughter..."

"...Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well. He rained us with bullets, and he shored us with shell. And in 5 minutes flat we were all blown to hell, then he blew oss home to Australia..."

Sorry for the thread jack, but I just released the beta for 'La Belle Epoque', and would love to get some beta testers

          • Whoops I seem to have gotten it mixed up with an equally awful song called 'I was only 18'. I studied both songs in high school, and have spent the last 6 years supressing all memories of them

You should know this, since you exhibit it at every opportunity - it's rabid nationalism and hatred of foreigners

If there is a free slot (!) you could perhaps use it as an upgrade to the MkIV, with twice the speed (or range if it's a missile unit).

I would still not give the Germans a tank if I were you. The A7V was a complete disaster - so much so that only about 20 were ever made. it's pitiful ground clearance and huge weight made it virtually immobile on the battlefield, and it's great height made it unstable (some even fell over ). Personally, I'd go with the idea of stormtroopers as the German equivalent to the Entente tanks - with perhaps a tech called 'infiltration tactics' or some-such as a preq.

BTW, I have already started a MkIV today, but got side-tracked when the footy came on the telly
                  Hi there, fairline!
I had two ideas, limited by unit space.
One was to have the generic MKIV as a 'disposable' attacker - to be upgraded to the FT17 for heavier action.

This weapon would be available to all...

On the other hand is specialised units - giving the MKIV to the Entente - and the STs to the Germans.
This would leave the way open for the Centrals to develop the massive Krupps gun, as a special trench breaker.

Option two is where I am heading, methinks - The ST could be a match for the tank,
but, like all troops - not very defendable against the iron monsters!

                    • Curt I frankly agree that the German Storm Trooper instead of the tank is the most historically acurate idea.

If only you were able to use Fairline's amazing Ft-17 tank, I think that was the desegnation. The scenario you've created Curt would be just perfect for its use, however I respect the fact that this scenario is about the men, not the machines. Who afterall did nearly all of the killing and nearly all of the dying.

                            • They actually showed Arsenal slaughter another team (Blackpool?) on US cable tv. No ManU jerseys in sight - AFAIK, that's kinda rare over here.

Btw Curt, did they really play footy in stadia to placate the masses during WWI?
