    • Yes- except that it was 1886 and I only got fudamentalism in 1891 (when I took Kiev)...

But you're right, I could have found a cheaper alternative... I think I found this food caravan lying around when I started, and so just decided to use it...

Note that even if it existed before, it's no excuse because I believe I built another one for Coastal Fortress...

        • Status report: as I expected, the turns are taking a long time. I've played through the end of 1897 so far, and the invasion is well underway. The Russians are reduced to 3 cities (from 8 at the start of my tenure), the Vikings from 17 to 13 (and, more importantly, from >6000 gold to just under 2000), and the Mongols from 3 to 1. I haven't handled partisans very well, leaving forts open behind my lines, but I'll be ready for them next turn.

          • Sounds plenty good to me DaveV - once you've finished this one why not try your hand at the Us against Them Free-for-all??

            • Stu - I'm busy in Real Life at the moment, and am going through something of a Civ II hiatus. I'll rejoin succession games when I'm happy, rather than disappointed, when my turn rolls around.

              • OK, Dave -- I hope that your RL is happy busy rather than the other -- see you when we can.

I join with Stu in the wish for your happiness and well being. Hope is that "this too shall pass" is the order of the day. For what it's worth, I have found, in my circumstance, that a disappointment is a reassessment that has not yet been made. Be well my friend.

                  • Stu and Monk,

Thanks for your concern, but I didn't mean to imply any personal crisis - I'm just busy with wife, kids, and work. I have very little time left over for gaming, and, frankly, would rather spend it on other games than Civ II. I still try to keep up with my friends here, but don't have much interest in playing at the moment.

                    • OK, five turns seems like enough at this point. Highlights: the Mongols are no more, the Russians and Vikings should be gone next turn. The English were inconsiderate enough not to clear a path through the jungle to their few remaining cities. The Chinese remain unmolested, but are now squarely in the crosshairs. The Japanese and their hidden city of Shimonoseki are still out there somewhere...

Excess white goods have been sold, a few rushbuilds have been made, but I tried to leave some decisions for my successor.

                      The details:
1894 Sell research/growth buildings. Sliders to 5.0.5 for celebrations. Build engineers in cities with extra food, howies in cities with barracks, transports in coastal cities, spies or fanatics otherwise. Put Elvis to work; change him to a tax collector where there's no available tile.
Build Northport. Barb leader captured (nicely set up, Cyrion!).
Russians get Mass Production from the Chinese, Miniaturization from the English for Mass Production.
Japanese get Tactics from the Chinese for Chemistry.
Mongols get Automobile from the Japanese.
                      Pollution near St. Petersburg.
1895 Sliders to 8.0.2, income is 2418. Sabotage Russian cruiser off Yakutsk, spy is lost . Move damaged units to Minsk and Moscow to heal. There are no barracks on the home continent (though I could swear I had some on my last turn ). Pillage Russian forts with extra units. Kursk bribed for 210. Build Tithes 1, Tithes 2. Oil Kagoshima->OSM, 82.
Chinese get Electronics from Russians, Leadership from Japanese, Refining and Combustion from English.
Japanese get The Corporation from Chinese.
English get Electronics from Chinese, start Hoover.
                      Mongols get Physics from Japanese.
Vikings capture Krasnoyarsk , get Mass Production.
1896 Krasnoyarsk conquered, 288 gold. Westport, East Port, Tithes 3 built. Kharkov bribed for 523 gold , 123 gold plundered. Grozny bribed for 425 gold, 92 gold plundered. Maikop bribed for 402 gold, 82 gold plundered.
1897 Riga (31, destroyed), Skara (465), Trondheim (406, capital), Kaupang (418, capital), Roskilde (300, capital) captured. Viking cash goes from 6000+ to 1982 gold. Russian battleship near East Port bribed for 624 gold (ouch). Mongol Port built, Basra (100, 49), Khorasan (238, 41) bribed. Guerilla uprising near Nagoya.
                      Vikings get Flight from English.
                      1898 Ravening Enge (capital, 255), Uppsala (81), Westness (capital, 106), Jarlshof (1387, 71), Viborg (???), Aarhus (72), The Udal (32), Jorvik (52), Jarrow (40), Lunde (313, 15) captured/bribed.
Gibbon reports we are most advanced, followed by English, Vikings, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, Mongols.
                      1899 Lindholm (63), Nottingham (140), London (capital, 83), Warwick (33), Liverpool (capital, 41), Newcastle (11), Dover (17), Brighton (11), Hastings (11), Coventry (27), York (10) conquered. Coventry (385, 8), Oxford (440, 9), Shangtu (74, 40) bribed, Mongols destroyed.
                      Novgorod (1640, 424) bribed.
                      Odense (438, 232) bribed.
                      Hides Kashgar->OSM, 176; spice Pamplona->OSM, 85.
Two partisans disbanded in Brighton to rush-build a transport during revolt.

Notes for my successor: there are two engineers in the stack on the swamp east of Brighton; they should be able to road the square and allow some extra movement for the spies. The transport in Maikop is meant to explore the nearby island. Russian unit spotted at (64,52)!

I declare Julius Brenzaida to be at the helm. He will do us proud!

Btw, looks great, DaveV -- and sorry to hear we'll be seeing less of you around here.
