  • Deep in the middle of the desert Gaara trains to fight Lord Zanza. As each day passes he becomes faster, stronger, and perfects his ninja arts. Everything is going according to Lord Zanza’s plan. He knew killing Kenshin would bring the wrath of Gaara and that’s exactly what he wanted. He sent one of his top ninja to capture him in two days. So the ninja waited and watched as Gaara trained.

      • Roman warriors have encountered a unknown civilization which has a flag with a curved sword on it.

"We greet you travelers, we are know as the Romans. We are exploring these lands on the order of the great Romulus- may we ask who are you? And can you tell us anything of lands to the west?"

        • Meeting in the Desert

The warriors that Asiz had sent in order to lay claims on the desert met a new tribe. The were armed in the same way, but looked much more like the Oldonians... Their skin was light in colour and their hair was not as thick as the one of the Piercians.

They were spoken to, surprisingly in an intelligible language. To their greetings, the leader of the piercian expedition answered :

" Greetings stranger, we are the Piercians. We have come from the jungles in the south-west, and you are standing at the eastern border of our lands. You are welcome as a visitor."

He thought about anything usefull he could say to the stranger, so he went on :

" If you follow the coastline, you will arrive at Asizia in about ten journeys. If you go straight to the west, you will see a great lake ; Lake Iris, named after our Empress. On the northern shore of that lake, you will find another tribe's home. The Wyandot Nation. We have tied bounds of friendship with theese people, so don't you offend them in any way. Even further in the west, you may meet a tribe we have only heard about, even if rumors say that our leaders have spoken with them in the past ; the Oldonians. Their skin is like yours, but their hair is golden, and they are not as small as you are. So watch out, rumors say they have ferocious warriors who can kill a bear with only their hands."

"We have been given something for occasions like this one. Take this piece of pottery, representing a great creature we call El-Ey-Fat that lives in our lands and works with our people. May this be a first sign of friendship between our people."

"In the end, I have to warn you. The hill we are standing on, will be settled soon by our people. Any attempts to avoid that, would lead to war. On the other hand, you can feel free to settle on the upper river. There are hills with golden ore you may like to work."

"Oh yes, one last thing : In the north from here, are barbarian settlements. They are wild people, who won't talk to you the way we did."

          • A messenger arrives at the Roman border.

All hail and greetings to great Rome and the King of Romani, and it's illustrious etceteras.

            From. Pitr. Lord of Rus.

Perhaps you know all too well the skill of my cartographers, but if you do not, then I shall have you informed that my Slavs have explored all lands from the great desert river, eastwards to seaboard where Novgorod, First Home of Rus lies.

You speak of a desire of the "fertile" lands east of the river you call Ren. I can only assume you mean the river that runs from Mountains, north into the bay of Portogaul. Allow me to most politely establish that this is completely out of question. That river is the natural western border of my lands and any infringement across it will be responded to with extreme unpleasentness.

As I have established that we know well the surroundings of Rome, as well as our own. Based on this cartography I can inform you that you possess already the most fertile lands we have yet to discover, including unending rivers many natural resources, and green everstretching lands. Despite of this, you have stretched far from your natural home and taken lands that you likely cannot responsibly control. Poorer lands than your immediate home area. And now you make bid for land of Rus. Your cities already span a greater territory than all the lands east of the Mountain river. Your expansion is such a poorly disguised Imperialism, that I feel that someone must politely tell you to stop. Your expansion is an affront to my people and me personally. As my cartographers have told me, the lands surrounding Rome is so lush and rich, that not settling there is nothing more than blatant takink of lands that otherwise befall Rus and Port-Gauls, merely for purpose of deprivink us of it. As a good neighbour, I advisink, kindly, stop expanding towards my lands.

Should you make attempt to infringe upon our lands we will not hesitate to remove such a presence. Both Cumae and Ravenna are dangerously close to Rus land, and we do not recognize your claim to these lands.

Another matter of concern. Your two warriors wandering around in that area are not particularily welcome. Should you desire to send Scouts instead of armed men, they will be well received, but your warriors are as of currently being kindly asked to return west, as their presence cause some disconcert to my workers and people.

Now that I have been takink care of matters of problem, matter of nicer things can be discussed. Your offer of trade is much interesting to me. I would much like to open such a relationship, and my working Slavs would be able to quickly build road to your lands. Of course, until the situation with your farflung colonies is resolved, no such arrangement can beink made. Though I very much be likink to visit Rome and show the ways of the Rus.

            • Border Purposal for Rome

Here is what we can say about our lands in the west.

You can see what we are planning to settle here where we met.

The red line is the one we don't expect your settlers to cross (fat crosses of cities not trepassing that line).

The big "?" marks a needed agreement with the Wyandot Nation. You should walk in the direction we have indicated for negociating with them.

If you want to meet the Oldonians, we have indicated the direction too.

Here is something you may want to aknowledge before thinking about refusing our purposal.

From: Numa Pompilius, King of Rome

We find your border proposal acceptable. Rome will control the desert province and Piercians can have the fertile southern lands.

We thank you for the information concerning the nations to the west and the geography of the western lands. Would your majesty be interested in a joint project to build a road to connect our two empires? This would open the doors to trade and cooperation.

We however do not appreciate thinly wailed threats. And Rome is according to our mystics quite close in power and production capability to the Piercian empire.

The guard tells Lord Zanza about the ship but Lord Zanza seems to preocupied to care. He tells the guard to give them a warning to get out of Japanese waters or we will consider this an act of war.

                  • Historical note: Romulus established the Senate after he founded Rome by hand selecting the most noble men (those of wealth and legitimate wives and children) to serve as a council for the city. As such, the Senate was the King’s advisory council as the Council of State. The Senate was composed of 300 Senators, with 100 Senators representing each of the three ancient tribes of Rome: the Ramnes (Latins), Tities (Sabines), and Luceres (Etruscans) tribes. Within each tribe, a Senator was selected from each of the tribe's ten curiae. The king had the sole authority to appoint the Senators, but this selection was done in accordance with ancient custom.

Under the monarchy, the Senate possessed very little power and authority as the king held most of the political power of the state and could exercise those powers without the Senate's consent. The chief function of the Senate was to serve as the king’s council and be his legislative coordinator. Once legislation proposed by the king passed the Comitia Curiata, the Senate could either veto it or accept it as law. The king was, by custom, to seek the advice of the Senate on major issues. However, it was left to him to decide what issues, if any, before them and he was free to accept or reject their advice as he saw fit. Only the king possessed the power to convene the Senate, except during the interregnum, during which the Senate possessed the authority to convene itself.

It was noon and the kings called on the senate for advice.

"Aelius can you hear what they are talking about? They have been in there for hours."

"Not with you constantly talking. Shut up for a change!"

"... and so it is clear that we are deeply disturbed by the settling of the northern Rus town, this is an outrage..."

"Bah! They talk again of the eastern barbarians... this will take all day.

"I think they prefer to be called Rus..."

"Why should I care, I have yet to see any sign of their supposed civilized nature that Romulus proclaimed."

"... the words of the dear general are what is outrageus. He would drag us into war!"

"...I shall not let this kingdom that has stood for two thousand years be split in two!"

"War? By the Gods what could have provoked such talk?!"

"From what I understand we sent a very friendly diplomatic letter, the response was less than civil and border line paranoid filled with accusations and not containing a counter-proposal."

"I heard they where ticked off by one word "envious". I don't think this is true, I mean if anything that was flattery of the highest degree!"

"We offered them all the land beyond the river Ren but they are not pleased! I tell you they seek to take Cumae and Raveena for themselvese..."

"We are the third military power in the entire world, or so our oracles say. In any case our intelligence on their military capacity points to a lack of potency. I say the senate and the two honorable kings of Rome give me command of 5 legions to conquer these barbarians!"

                    *****

The sky was dark and filled with stars-

"Caelius! Wake up, we can't fall asleep the senators would have our heads."

"Eh? Thanks Aelius, last time I was this tired was when we fought the Portugese axemen up north. That reminds me, did I ever tell you about the wine we looted from their camp?"

"Shhh! I think the king is speaking."

                    "Which one?"

                    "I don't know!"

So with the support of the majority of the senate I do regret to overrule my co-regent. We shall send another friendly letter. If the Rus do not respond, we shall begin military build up in preparation to defend our two border colonies"

                    "That's it?!"

"Be quiet and look sharp, general Hostilius is heading our way."

"Tell me boys, what does a Roman do when insulted?

                    ...

                    Oh, almost forgot. Speak freely."

"He hits the son of a ***** in the face."

That's what I thought, you are good men, Rome will need men like you in the coming years...

With those words the general left. Aelius was looking forward to his promotion.

"I tell you I'm sure I'll be a city raider!"

"Hey, he said men not man, I'm sure I'll get that promotion too!"

The two men argued all the way to the barracks.

                    • To: Pitr, Lord of the Rus
From: Numa Pompilius and Romulus the Kings of Rome

Your letter is filled with heavy words and accusations you have also not directly commented our border proposal. We are disturbed by this. Reread our previous letter, is it anything but honest and friendly in tone or content?

We do not intend to expand beyond our two border colonies, but calling their settling "imperialistic" is outrageous! They have stood for centuries and are far closer to the city of Rome than to the ancestral lands of the Rus or Portuguese. Our lands are not wast and fertile as you seem to believe. To the north they have been settled by the Portugese, to the east there is nothing but desert (albeit a river does run thought it) to the south there is jungle filled with savage beasts. Rome has settled a thin strip of good land and founded two colonies on each side of the Alps to ensure our control of the mountain chain.

We do see why our two explorers might be considered a threat, we shall instruct them to stay out of land settled by the Rus, we do however want to continue to explore the east just as you have the west. They shall soon pass beyond your lands, if they find that all land is yours, they shall return home.

We shall not waste your time further, the new picture we send is our new border proposal. It grants you control of lands beyond the Ren (with one minor exception) and recognizes the northern Rus settlement of as legal.

We hope the current strain on our relations was merely a misunderstanding. May bridges of more than one kind be built among our lands in the future.

                      Sincerely,
                      Rex Numa Pompilius
                      Rex Romulus

From: Numa Pompilius, King of Rome

We understand proud warriors can be less than skilled in the art of diplomacy. Our own generals are proving to be a headache in diplomatic matters.

We gladly provide you with this map of the East, in time, once we know more about you, we may provide more recent and detailed ones.

To the North are the civilized people of Portugal, they are highly developed and sensitive to people exploring their land. We have fought them in the past, but currently they seem amicable neighbors. They have also settled the fertile land west of Cumae.

To the east live the tribes of the Rus, which are commanded by Lord Pitr. They where friendly in the past, but it appears they are running out of space to expand... needless to say this has prompted us to begin patrolling the Ren and the Alps. They may be tempted to cross our borders and begin settling in our lands.

There where plans of building a road to encourage trade with them, but no final agreement has been reached. If your highness agrees to cooperate with us in building a road and the Rus do the same, we could profit from this hundreds of miles long "Ivory road" immensely.

Out of Character: I just reread that It would be great story material if it happened... Imagine dozens of screaming Russian poprushed settlers, axemen and horsemen heading west and causing the collapse of the Roman empire.
