Let's play today and skip next week.
It's a pitty that we're missing 2 key players, but we can't keep delaying this game forever.

I hope we can find some good subs.
I think it's in nobodies interest to have 2 civs that are involved in the Jihad being played by the AI.

It benefits you to have everyone spread "your" religion to beef up your coffers/commerce/teching ability - in other words your a CIV thug wielding Germany and Portugal using a defensive pact and trading CIVS as an excuse to wage the bully war ;-).

      Clever indeed.

I have a suggestion for future Diplo games for those who like playing 'Team' style: Launch the game with CIVs being on the same team number - this way we will know who is on who's team. Diplomacy then can be done with teams' (factions) doing diplomacy between themselves - no anymosity and teams can be attempted to be made 'equal' from the get go.

      Oh I like Beta's story development :-D.

Inspires me to actually get interested in doing same.

        Another suggestion:

Seeing as in order to facilitate allowing for launching the game without 'everyone' from last session to be present, we have one person save the game when everyone else is gone, we should designate this person to be a different person every time.

I am not accusing any of cheating but, the fact that that one person has the potential of 'peeking' and trying game scenarios out before doing it, I would recommend this 'potential' not be given to the same person every week.

Perhaps designate it to a known player to show the next week who is not the previous person.

        Fair?

          1) My anti virus scan started during the game (major hit on disk activity - hence very slow to get data from disk = very slow period)

          2) I have auto save on (perhaps this should be turned off)

          3) I already warned about size of map/game and my 2001 comp.

          4) My connection is very stable.

            Right now I'm doing that.
I would never peek or cheat, but I understand your point and I'm ok with someone else saving the game every week.

            Regarding you comp:
it's true, you've told us before. Turning off autosave may help a lot! Since it's a problem that always occurs at the beginning of each turn. I suspect you've already putted everything on 'low'.
Maybe you can also try a lower screen resolution?

It's apparantly not your connection indeed, since I don't think you've dropped any session so far.

Regarding fixed alliances, my (our?) main issue is that alliances shouldn't be fixed, but change during the game. Nations that are allied through all kinds of eras are not really 'realistic'. Not that realism is the main goal of diplogames, but diplomacy has no purpose if everything is fixed in the end anyway.

I understand your point - but I think you missed mine:
some people 'want' to be on a team through the whole game - maybe it is 2v2v2v2v... *shrug* was just an idea

I hate to do this on short notice, guys, but I just got a call from a buddy of mine I haven't seen in ages that's in town tonight and wanted to hang out. :/ Haven't seen 'im since High School, and he's going to be busy all weekend so there's a get together going on.

Don't lose out on tonight's session on my account! I don't mind if the Natives are Sub-Less.

I again apologize for the absence.

                  Me.

A good IC lesson for us all.

                        • I'm looking forward to seeing the story posts!

With CS maintaining such good in character responses to the situation we saw a very realistic tur aroun d in international relations.

Another player in CS situation may have quit (I've seen that before) or just paid the 750 gold to get peace easily (like what I would have done). But this is really game mechanics based and CS maintained a much more realistic story that reflects what would have happened in history.

At the dipomacy level the jihad was ended. No actual cities were taken during the jihad and the key thing being asked by the Islamists was peaceful religious conversion. Russia and England peacefully converted and Ethiopia was next. No actual attacks though.

However, despite this the technical fact that America was still at war with the Dutch allowed the Dutch and the Romans to aggressively attack America. Even though jihad was declared ended they wanted 750 gold.

Knowing that the Portuguese were tied up on the Russian and Ethiopian borders and with huge AI armies in Germany and Russia the Dutch and Romans attacked an isolated America.

Cyber stayed true to form and re-ignited the rhetoric of the jihad rather than just pay the 750. Other nations became more and more sympathetic to the Americans and the Dutch/Romans became increasingly isolated themselves - a very realistic turn-around.

This added enormously to the diplo genre and deserves a piece in the faq I reckon.

Cyber is basically a legend now!

                          • much more realistic story that reflects what would have happened in history
Well looking it historically - much more civs have agreed to the demands by the attacking nation, I do not know of a single civ which have been presented with a peace deal and not signed it - but rather continue of lossing its population and infrastructure. I think the Americans underestimated the Dutch attacking capabilities and thus felt save and didn't want to sign peace which just costed 1500.

After taking hawaii they were offered peace each time before another city was taken - of course i really liked CS's IC role - but the americans would have been much better off paying the money then lossing pop size and infrastrature - its called preservation.

I know CS wasn't happy with me attacking in the first place, when he tried to sign peace. But after all that talk about Jihad for weeks and weeks and bringing the Dutch to their knees, all of a sudden one turn away from invading the Dutch get that change of character thing - and now all of a sudden peace is offered (i doubt it was a pure IC development, CS being a great story developer and this being a major change to the Americans world view - would have talked about it in his story posts. I instead saw it more of a defence move against a possible attack by me which was 1 turn away)

Well the fleet had its orders anyway

                            • Well CS is already a diplo legend from HOTW 7 - never seen a player love his civ so much and willing to play till the end with that crappy land of his. He was the only civ who decided to box it up with the Bulgarians that game, one big CS
